Inequalities: Fast Food and Kettering Road
Reflective account

During this assignment I enjoyed having the opportunity to look at new areas of social life that are often taken for granted and be able to get back into learning. The areas I have found difficult though have been how to plan to undertake the assignment as a full time working mother I had not taken into account how to plan time effectively and this is something I hope to improve on for future assignments.
TMA 01
Drawing on what you have learned about city road from the making social lives DVD and learning companion 1, outline some inequalities on a street which you know.

Inequality – difference in size, degree, circumstances, ect; lack of equality: social equality. (Oxford dictionary)

The street I will be looking at is the Kettering road in Northampton, this is a main road leading to the town centre within Northampton, which at times can be very busy as a main bus route and with people walking about and the amount of traffic that uses the road. There is large range of multicultural shops and fast food outlets along the road, as well as smaller local shops and charity shops, book makers and a public house.
There is a difference in the public that use the Kettering road in different times of the day, as during the day there may be a range of people using the road for shopping purposes and as a main route into the town centre and during the night time there may be more of the towns student population that use the Kettering road for the takeaways and those enjoying a drink within the town.

The inequalities which I will be looking at are:
1) How the Kettering road, despite its large multicultural population does not provide the infrastructure to support this.
2) How disability friendly the road is.

When looking at the Kettering road and in light of the study material I have studied there are some obvious similarities to city road in ‘the street’ DVD as it too has a vast multicultural society and this is identified with the shops

Nottingham Road has also grown as a result of counter-urbanization. Counter-urbanization is defined as the movement of people away from the busy city centres and out into the more peaceful countryside to try and settle their lives down. People would move to the countryside to increase the quality of their lives. There is cheap land in the more rural areas as well as cleaner air and a better quality of life. It is also easier to live out of the cities these days with the increase in the availability of transport and communication which is obviously a big part of life.…

I loved my home town, where I was born, but is smaller and quieter than llford. We don’t have many restaurants or pubs, so people go outside to the bigger city if they are spend time with friends. Both cities have got the cinema, the library, where children and adults borrow books, but inside there aren’t any activities for them. There are a few schools, two high and one college, but there isn’t any university. Pupils must study in another city and live in the boarding-houses. Sometimes it is…
