In the first chapter of the book, Native Peoples of the Southwest (Griffin-Pierce, 2000) we learn about the general history of the Native tribes of the Southwest. We learn of there independence and the periods of time they were taken over by other countries. It also talks of the land and those who dwelled there. It also gives us a little peak into there culture and their lives. This chapter was packed with information where we learned about different tribes homelands and past history with Spain, Mexico and the Americas.…
The unexpected attack surprised the Incas, where the Incas didn’t know they have superior numbers than the Spanish. And there were also other psychological factors, such an Inca god called Viracoxa was a white man, and the Incas thought these men might be the incarnation of Viracoxa.…

“From the fact that the Indians are barbarians it does not necessarily follow that they are incapable…” (de Las Casas 3). In For the Record, it starts off right away in this section of how the Europeans while not sure of what to make of the Indians they knew that these were not the savages as some had described. De Las Casas goes on to describe of a people that were both loyal and committed to the community and to their fellow man. De Las Casas main adversary, Gines Sepulveda, failed to see the parallel in the fate of the Spaniards at the hands of the Romans and Caesar Augustus. “Now see how he called the Spanish people barbaric and wild” (de Las Casas 3) demonstrates the same philosophy of the thoughts of Europeans as they encountered the Indians. Shall those that are fearful for the loss of all they have worked for not fight back and retain what is rightfully theirs. The Indians, especially the Aztecs had built cities, established political and economic organizations and created richly diverse civilizations. In The Jesuit Relations they recount the gratitude shown to the hospital nuns “The Savages who leave the hospital, and who come to see us again at St. Joseph, or at the three Rivers,…
Art is another cultural aspect that is loved in Central America. A famous artist from Mexico, Diego Rivera, was influenced by Russian Communism. He painted murals that delivered a revolutionary message, and these murals were not always welcomed due to the message they sent. Another artist, Juan Manuel Cedeno, became known as the “Chronicler of Panamanian nationality” because he “depicted scenes that were typical of domestic life in rural Panama.” (PITLANEMAGAZINE) A Guatemalan artist named Juan Sisay became famous from his Mayan influenced artwork. Sisay focused on portrait painting and used a strong element of nationalism in his pieces. Central America flourishes with beautiful pieces of art that were handcrafted by the artists mentioned above,…
The world in reverse is meant to demonstrate how the Spaniards were known as civilized peoples and were to behave like that, while the Natives were originally seen as savages. But after reading Las Casas’s account he describes and makes the reader view the Natives as civilized and Spaniards as the savages they try to make the natives seem to be. Las Casas confirms this quote “the world in reverse with his descriptions of both groups. He describes the Natives as “the most blessed people on earth”, innocent and pure in mind”, capable of learning, and never boisterous. His descriptions of the Spaniards are the complete opposite, they are described as “ravening wolves”, “tigers and savage lions who have not eaten meat for days” and as murderers.…
Between 1980 into the mid 1980s… the genocide of the Maya occurred within the city of modern Guatemala (p.355). It was during this time that the Mayan society were forced to leave their home in the altiplano (the highlands—due to an earthquake) and had to begin to assimilate with the rest of the Guatemala population. During this time, the Fuerzas Armadas Rebeldes (FAR) ladino organization extended their communist influence to those Mayas assosciated with the highlands. Therefore because of their emphasis upon the FAR and towards enabling their own highland culture within city of Guatemala that initially caused the Guatemalan city, under the leadership of General Benedicto Lucas, to initiate a war that would deprive the communist forces of their…
Guatemala was unsuccessful in progressing socially for the indigenous Mayan people after the Guatemalan civil war to a great extent, because of the lack of leadership and social attitude towards the indigenous Mayan people. The indigenous Mayan people were seen as inferior due to them being minorities in society, which caused them to barely possess any right before and after the war. Being the lower class of the Guatemalan society, caused them to yearn for social progress in society, which was something that was not prevalent. The Guatemalan government was not focused or concerned about their education, health, housing, livelihood or social protection.…
The citations relate to the hypothesis due to the fact that the Mayans used the Ball game as a replacement for warfare, settling territory and issues, and to predict the future. Captives or prisoners of wars were forced to play games that resulted in their sacrifice when they lost against an opponent. The Mayan Ball game would go on for days and was apart of the Mayans faith. These games could go on for days, and the first person to score was usually decided who to sacrifice.…
Morals and values are passed down and taught to one through traditions, customs, and beliefs. However as these traditions, customs, and beliefs are passed down they are altered through each generation. Native americans and other cultures lose a bit of themselves every year through the influence of western culture. Western culture not only influences traditions and customs but also devalues the importance of the cultures. Through the ignorance of today’s American society that we live in, the respect held for Native Americans and other cultures are fading day-by-day disrespecting them through selfish benefits. However, disregarding the loss of culture through the western culture, Native Americans put the effort to preserve…
In Guatemala, in the religious field one will find Roman Catholics and Protestants. Also there are indigenous Mayan beliefs. This comes from the large population of indigenous people. This also effects the languages spoken in Guatemala. Spanish is the main language, but then there are 23 other recognized indigenous languages. Most of these are Mayan.…
Centuries ago, there existed a religion, one with no true name, human sacrifices, games where participants are highly likely to die, and Gods found in almost every aspect of daily life. This was the ancient Mayan religion. Although some beliefs, values, and minor traditions are still upheld by followers today, for the most part this religion has completely vanished along with the ancient mayan civilization. This may be for good reason, as some of the practices were barbarous and bordering on pure insanity. Through the madness, there were three very important aspects of this religion that guided the mayans;…
“How far would you be go when millions of children live in extreme poverty every day and you woke up to discover one of them was yours? (Future for Rural Guatemala). Guatemala may be very efficient when it comes to production rates but when you look at the quality of life it’s a different story. (Guatemala - Poverty and wealth). “Only one out of ten first-graders will complete tenth grade.”…
Classic Maya culture developed in three regions in Mesoamerica, especially the central region" of southern Guatemala. The principal city in this region was Tikal, but the spread of urbanization extended south to Honduras; the southernmost Mayan city was Copan in northern Honduras. The largest and most complete urban center was Palenque. The other major region of Mayan development was the Yucatan peninsula making up the southern and eastern portions of modern-day Mexico. After the abandonment of the Classic Mayan cities, the Yucatán peninsula became the principal region of a new, synthetic culture called Toltec-Mayan which was formed when Toltecs migrating from the north integrated with indigenous Maya peoples.…
The Mayan culture is known for their rituals and ceremonies. Everything done in their culture had its place and time. This allowed the priest in the Maya community to know when to plant, harvest, as well as knowing which seasons were wet and which were dry. In Mayan belief, blood sacrifice performed by Kings was important for major calendar cycle endings. The beginning or ending of a cycle was cause for ceremony in this culture. In addition, children in are named after the day they were born and each day had a specific name for boy and girl and parents are to follow that practice. Also, Mayan healers believed that there are male and female energies associated with the calendar. The male energy cycle ended on November 11, 2011 and is celebrated…
