In a very reverent, yet quick, address, Abraham Lincoln not only honorably bestows a farewell to the soldiers who gave their lives for the livelihood of their country, but through his rhetorical usage of juxtaposition, repetition, and parallelism, Lincoln unites his speech together, and this in turn transfers into his central message of unity as a nation.…
Many of the most influential leaders throughout history accompanied their actions with their words. A fine speech compels its audiences and convinces them to believe a different view. The three notable speeches of my class that exceeded my expectations were Jeremy Wong’s on the rising costs of homes in the lower mainland, John Thomas’ on the benefits of driving electric vehicles, and the banning of Niqab during Canadian citizenship ceremonies by Gabriella Hermary.…
“I have a dream”, “the Battle or the Bullet”, “Women’s rights are human rights.” are all powerful, memorable speeches. What makes them so memorable? Their constant use of rhetorical devices and persuasive language of course. The language they use makes for a magnificent speech that is unforgettable. Those are just some speeches that possess such great ideas and powerful techniques. To add to that are the Adoption of the “Declaration of Human Rights” by Eleanor Roosevelt, and “My message to the young women of Elizabeth Garrett Anderson School” by Michelle Obama. These two speeches both embody a powerful message through writing techniques and rhetorical devices. Both speeches include a plethora of emotional appeals, metaphors, and more than anything, allusions.…
After reviewing the four speeches I chose to address The Gettysburg Address. To me this is one of the most important speeches in history addressing the past, present and future. Abraham Lincoln started his speech by reminding his audience that 87 years ago our country was founded based on Liberty and equality. Then added that our nation was being tested therefore the Civil War took place they fought and won. Lincoln acknowledged those who have fallen for our country and also reminded his audience that Civil War was not just a fight but also a way to save the union; which would bring freedom and equality for them at that time as well as the future.…
Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr both said amazing speeches, Lincoln’s “Gettysburg Address” and Dr.King’s “I have a dream”. Although Lincoln was an American president and Dr.King was an African-American civil rights leader, both King and Lincoln told their speeches for the reason of urgency for freedom, but conveyed it in different ways. The common theme between their speeches is the demand for immediate change. Both of these speakers used rhetoric to affect their crowd, for example, when Lincoln says “Men gave their lives so a country might live”, or when Dr.King repeats “Let it ring” over and over again.…
Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the thirty-second commander and chief of the United States of America, or as most know him, the president. He was the man in office at the time of the attack on Midway. His address to Pearl Harbor was a moving speech that had big lines in it that are still remembered today. For example, “The people of the United States have already formed their opinions and well understand the implications to the very life and safety of our nation” (1). Over and over he reassures Congress that the American people want justice and that this evil betrayal will not go unpunished.…
