Hsc 21 Unit 1
Introduction

Young or inexperienced practitioners may feel daunted when they start to work within a setting. Learning how to communicate appropriately with colleagues, parents and others who are involved with the setting is an important way in which they can feel settled and start to make a valuable, positive contribution to the team. This unit will help with this process. Learners will focus on the importance of effective communication, establishing what the most appropriate communication method is for each individual and how to overcome barriers to communication. Learners will also be taught the principles of confidentiality.

Learning outcomes

Unit SHC 21 is divided into five learning outcomes:

1 Understand why communication is important in the work setting.

2 Be able to meet the communication and language needs, wishes and preferences of individuals.

3 Be able to reduce barriers to communication.

4 Be able to apply principles and practices relating to confidentiality at work.

Learners will notice some strong links with TDA 2.7 Maintain and support relationships with children and young people. It is recommended that this unit on communication is taught as a foundation for TDA 2.7.

Additional guidance for delivery

If possible, use a DVD player for Session 1. Source a film where actors’ facial expressions, body language and gestures clearly show their feelings. Play a small section of the DVD without sound and ask learners to interpret the communication they are observing.

It would be helpful for the learner to have read their setting’s confidentiality policy before Session 4.

As a group, or on an individual basis, ask the learners to complete the Interactive Knowledge Check to finish the unit.

1.1 - Communication is a two way process and is how a person will send a message and how a person will receive and understand the message. Communication is not only about the words used but the manner in which you use them. The main feature of two way communication is the flow of information from both ways. This process is called a communication cycle. Communication always has a purpose and this may be to pass on information or an idea, to express a need or want to persuade someone to do something, share confidential information and share or express emotions. A message coded is when an individual thinks about how they are going to say what they are thinking and decides in what form the communication is, this could be in spoken words or sign language. An individual will then put it into this form. A message understood is if the message has been communicated clearly and the other person has concentrated and there are no barriers to communication, the other person understands the message. They show they have understood by giving feedback. The stages of the communication cycle are repeated backwards and forwards as long as the conversation goes on.…
