Hrm/531 Week 4
1. Which of the six reasons that control is needed are apparent in this case? Explain.
• Complexity of effective delivery is needed to successfully achieve the company’s goal of providing customers with the best delivery services (Kinicki & Williams, 2016, pg. 513). UPS needs to reduce the complexity of the services to reduce the risk of unexpected failures, such as weather changes. In addition to that, with the growth of the company also comes with the expansion of the level of production and product lines. If the company reduces the level of complexity of services, it will be easier to keep track of production.
2. To what extent does the process Scott Abell uses to manage shipments of packages during holiday periods follow the control process shown in Figure 16.3? Discuss.

The steps that Scott Abell takes in managing the shipments of packages during the holiday period is made the fit the large capacity of online orders (Kinicki & Williams, 2016, pg. 514). UPS recruited 55,000 seasonal employees to meet seasonal needs and Abell spends a large amount of time developing a shipment plan just for the holidays. Scott Abell uses the control process to plan how these shipments ship out only the next day, two day, or three days after the holiday. This is not an efficient way to ship packages to customers, because keeping the practices the same does not allow room for mistakes and corrections.
3. If you were charged with creating a balanced scoreboard for Scott Abell, what SMART goals (see Chapter 5), would you use to assess performance in the four categories in your scorecard? Develop one SMART goal for each scorecard
