INTRODUCTION NTPC Limited, formerly known as National Thermal Power Corporation, was incorporated by Government of India in 1975 to supplement the efforts of states for quicker and greater capacity addition with mandate for planning and organizing an integrated development of thermal power in India to support the power needs of the Indian economy. In 1997 Department of Public Enterprises, Government of India provided Navratna status to the company with powers of operational autonomy to the Board of NTPC.
