How to write 3 paragraph essay responses
Before you read:
Take note of the title, the author’s name and look to see if there is any biographical information on the author. Have you heard of this author before? You might want to Google him/her.
Go on the internet to look over the periodical (publication) that the article came from.
What do you already know about the subject, the publication or the website it came from?
I recommend that you print out a hard copy of the reading. That way, you can write on the document if you have comments about the material, questions or just want to make sure that you “get” what the author is saying.
While you read:
Put question marks by anything you don’t understand or want clarified.
Also, circle words that are new to you (you can use them in your SEEI part of the assignment).
Take notes of key words, phrases and any information that might be new to you and worthy of a quick Google search.
As you read, you should also try to make connections to other things you have read or even in your own life experiences.
After you read:
Write your first paragraph- a summary of the article. First, you will write the “name of the article”, the author, and the publication it comes from. Then you will write a sentence that contains the main idea of the article and 3 to 5 supporting details. This paragraph should only be about 5-6 sentences (not lines) long enough to communicate your point. This is a summary so I do NOT want to see the words “I” or “me”. This paragraph is not about you.
The second paragraph will contain a quote that jumps off the page at you- or what you think is the most important passage in the reading. Rewrite this in your paragraph, and put “quotes around it” along with the paragraph you found the quote. Then you will tell me why you think that this passage is meaningful to you.
