Australian Guide to Healthy Eating
The Australian Guide to Healthy Eating is a document that provides a guideline for an optimal diet for a healthy Australian person. It dictates that healthy food groups such as grains and wholegrain meals, vegetables, fruit, lean meats, and milk must be consumed regularly as part of a healthy diet, combined with plenty of water. It can be used to optimise a person’s diet to a healthy standard, combined with regular exercise and an otherwise healthy lifestyle. Grain and wholemeal foods provide dietary fibre, as well as vitamins and minerals. Fruit and vegetables also provide fibre, as well as carbohydrates (energy in sugars and starches). The Healthy Eating Guidelines are one example of something that affects the societal norm, but media platforms like TV shows, commercials and movies can drastically alter the body images of many in a society. For example, TV series like The Bachelor, which depict “ordinary” people with toned faces, white teeth and perfect skin, can influence body image. If a child or teenager sees this, it becomes the norm for what they expect everyday people to look like. They aspire to become this person, and therefore their body image and perception changes. They can develop eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia, and this can lead to debilitation or even death. Even media sources like Facebook or Instagram can have massive effects, sometimes far greater than the effects of television or movies. Young people, in particular, see friends and others posting pictures of themselves in better shape than they are, and can aspire to be like them, even if this is unrealistic. Another condition occurs when a person’s body image is altered and when they start to eat if they’re depressed. This is known as binge eating, and can lead to obesity and later
