Honor Code Dbq
WCCS should adopt an honor code because it sets the standard for the students to live by, creates an environment where cheating is less likely to occur, and helps students develop habits which can benefit them later in life. The honor code can have wide spread effects on a school, ranging from increasing the individual integrity of students to improving the school’s overall atmosphere. The integrity of the students should be based on a central moral code or rule. Without a standard, anything can be considered correct since it was never clearly addressed as wrong. No communication of a school’s expectations leaves room for students to decide right from wrong based on their own moral standards. Standards can vary widely from person to person. Source C suggests that an honor code’s expectations can determine reality. The only way for everyone to abide by the same morals is for everyone to be held accountable to the same set of rules. A quote from Source B perfectly describes the reason for an honor code, as an honor code “provides students a clear explanation of the importance of behaving with integrity and the expectation that our resulting actions will increase trust and respect....” …show more content…
Source F explains the results of a study in which two thirds of high school students reported seeing one or more cases of cheating in the last year. Source F also reveals that “there is growing evidence many students take these habits with them to college.” So, by setting the standard that lying and cheating are wrong early on in life, you can help prepare students and prevent them from forming bad habits. Proverbs 22:6 (KJV) says, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” By giving an honor code, the school can ensure that students are being taught moral values. These values can then be used by students both in and out of the

I have learned that being an ethical learner requires honesty. We should behave in a proper manner and make the correct choices when doing our work. Cheating and dishonesty should never be accepted even if you are falling behind with your school assignments. The definition of democracy is “a form of government where the supreme power is vested within the people and exercised by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system.” The main principles of democracy include majority rule with minority rights, competing political parties, individual liberty, and free elections. These ideals have been the foundation of American democracy since the Declaration of Independence. However, other democracies value each ideal differently than the United States. This paper will evaluate whether or not the principles of democracy are reflected in the qualifications, election, and structure of the executive branch. It will argue that although liberty is represented in the qualifications of the executive branch, that free elections, and minority rule are not represented in the election and structure of the executive branch.…

Students have lost confidence in themselves and are now being walked over by others. I hear common stories from my classmates about how someone cheated off of their homework or test, but they don’t want to say anything to the teachers. They have allowed themselves to assume the role of the pushover. The cheaters in this situation are sometimes talked into it by their friends. They are told the only way to pass a teachers class is to cheat, or that “it’s only homework,” or the classic, “a class that cheats together, passes together.” By encouraging my friends to always reject those trying to use them for answers, there has been a decrease in cheating in our classes. If students across the country were the ones to go out and preach not cheating, our society would be much better off. Instead of saying, “a class that cheats together, passes together,” students should be saying, “a class that stays together, goes to the unemployment office together.” The habit of cheating and following the crowd in school will follow students into their future endeavors. Students have failed to make the connection between their actions now and their lives down the line. Though they may get a passing grade now, students are depriving themselves of knowledge the will need to be successful in the long run. For these reasons, it is necessary to encourage students to speak out against cheating. Doing so would…

In the wake of numerous cheating scandals, such as those at the University of Virginia and Harvard, many people have began to question the effectiveness of honor codes (sources C, D). Honor codes can be defined as a set of rules implemented in a school that are based around morals that define both acceptable and unacceptable behaviors. While many feel as though such guidelines are necessary in maintaining a schools’ dignity, others believe that honor codes are impossible to enforce. Honor codes should not be enforced because they are too harsh, unrealistic, and put innocent students in uncomfortable social situations.…

Commonly, teenagers see an honor code as “just another rule to obey,” (source B), however a few pledges of morality every now and then, help remind students of their responsibilities, making acceptance more common in regards to the code - because it is not being forced upon anyone. The inclination of cheating among students attending Paloma spreads however, the development of positive “community standards,” (source F) made by one person displays the domino effect of ethical behavior. When enforced strategically, the utilization of the honor code halts the normality of cheating, and promotes the ethical study habits made by all. This helps contribute to the success of students going to college, without the threat of…
