Homework Should Be Optional
Homework should not be compulsory or banned; homework should be optional.
In nearly every school system in Victoria specific tasks are set out to each student to be completed outside of the classroom and at home. In nearly all cases, students are asked to complete the tasks given to them by a certain due date. Most students cannot do this because of their involvement with extra curricular activities such as sport or music which is also a form of learning. Homework takes up so much time, that students do not always have enough time for their after school activities, which requires them to attend to lessons/training, and then to practice, so they cannot always complete all the homework tasks given to them.
Homework is revision of work students have already done in school. So, it is not fair to those students who have a thorough understanding of a particular topic to have to do more on it; they could be doing work on another subject that they really need to work on in that time - e.g. John Smith may be exceptionally good at Maths but have a lot of trouble with English. Therefore he would be better of using that time for English instead of Maths.
At secondary school, good, motivated students are often those who finish homework assignments on time and at a fairly high standard. Other students may also complete these homework assignments but often it is as a result of parental intervention through threats of being grounded or losing privileges. In some cases, it is quite possible that parents end up doing their child’s homework for them because it is due the next day, or they are very competitive and want their child to be better than everyone else’s.

Students from “Melbourne High” are amongst the top schools when it comes to V.C.E enter scores. One of the possible reasons is that they have been learning in a positive learning environment whereby students are allowed to decide whether they want to do homework or not! This enables students to become

Moreover, homework isn't only wasting the student's time but the teachers time as well. By marking and grading homework, teachers are wasting their time. So teachers, please don't blame us the we wasted your time. Some people assume that homework is useful for teachers to watch student's progress but I firmly believe that homework is sent home to test the parents, not the children. I think that teachers can watch the student's progress in school better because teachers don't know that at home who did the homework, the parent, the student or the internet (Google)??????? People also think that homework helps parents to understand that the school holds high goals for students. But, I consider that school work is harder than homework and that means that parents can understand that the school holds higher goals than they think. Furthermore, homework becomes terrible if no one can help you. If no one can help you then you are doing work that you don’t understand, and if you don’t understand it what’s the point having the work that you can’t even do. I really, strongly believe that more kids would stay in school and have a better learning experience if they did not have the stress of homework.…

Homework doesn't take all day; realistically you will have time for other things. Homework allows practice for future endeavors, and teaches responsibility and organization skills. Homework allows children to work at their own pace, without peer pressure and afraid of falling behind during class. Homework allows time to study for tests, and go over work that you did in class. Reason being yes I understand that different classes have different papers and some have more worksheets than others but…

Some students don’t know what to do when the teacher assign their homework. They don’t know what to do because when the teachers assign them homework the night before to do, they spent all night doing it. Then the next day at school they are way too tired to process any work and lesson the teachers are teaching. They would just fall asleep and pay less attention. That causes the student to not know what to do and they just write down random answers. Then when they turn it in the teachers mark it wrong and give them a bad grade. Eventually with all these bad grades in their file it will bring their grades down a lot. This would just give more stress to the students and drain their energy. An average person should be getting about seven to eight hours of sleep a night not two or three…

To begin with, homework is taking way family time and fun time from students. Because students get a lot of homework they no longer have time to spend time with their family or have their own free time. For instance, in the article titled “5 Reasons Why Homework is Bad for Your Child,” the author states, “Children need time to spend with their family, catch up with friends and attend extracurricular activities so they can refresh their minds and bodies.” The reasons that are stated in the article specifically, are examples of how homework takes away family time. School is supposed to only take up to 6 hours but with homework it no longer take 6 hours of school work but more. Therefore, students don’t have enough time to do there own things.…

Since Roberto Nevilis introduced it to the world as a punishment in 1905, there have been many arguments to whether or not homework should be required. What initially started as punishment for kids who messed around in class has become a mandatory task that all students are required to do daily. I’m here to end that, I intend to show you that students should not be required to complete homework for a grade. Homework consumes too much time and leaves no space for extracurricular activities and causes health problems. On top of that, many students don’t even have the resources required to complete the homework. Despite these things, homework is still a graded assignment that if failed to complete, can drastically bring down a student's grade.…

Finally, homework is very demanding on kids. “In most U.S schools, homework has become more demanding and time-consuming (scope magazine, pages 20-21, lines 33-35). Studies have shown that most kids feel very stressed about schoolwork and homework. There is a lot of pressure to do well in school. Some kids feel like “if they don’t get help from their parents, they will be at a competitive disadvantage with classmates who do.” (scope magazine, pages 20-21, lines 69-72).…

Most of the time the homework you'd get for an assignment is unnecessary and teaches totally unrelated stuff. Homework can also be very frustrating and, in a classroom, you can always ask a professional. However, at home, most of the time your parents won't even know what the lesson is teaching and how to help you. In my opinion, kids shouldn't have homework at all.…

Second of all, sometimes, when a kid gets assigned homework, it will be from a lesson they just started learning, so he or she doesn’t have a lot of knowledge on it. When they come home, they don’t remember it very well, so they just try a method that makes since. But, if it’s wrong, then they will just be practicing and memorizing the wrong thing. This shows that if students try to go and do an assignment on a topic that they just learned, then they are going to have a lot of trouble understand and doing the work correctly. Another example is if they ask a parent for help, they could teach them the wrong thing because they learned it so long ago. Then the student would become confused and have to chose between two different concepts that they’ve learned. In addition, in a survey of 778 parents, 84% of the parents helped with homework. This proves that kids go home with lots of questions because they are still confused on the topic. This shows that because students are still confused, they have to ask their parents to help them, and most of the time even they don’t know how to do it the correct way. Clearly, because students are still confused on the topic they will either just do it the wrong way…

As a student, I know how much work homework can be sometimes and how exhausting that it can be. That is why I think the first reason that giving homework should be forbidden is because homework is too much work for the kids to do and teachers to grade. First, it's too much work because you may get stuck on some of the problems, and you won't get a lot of help at home. Most parents do not understand and/or remember the level of work that you do and won't be able to help you figure it out. My older brother still has to ask for help sometimes from my dad but even he can't figure out what the answer is. Next, homework can be very confusing. Sometimes there might be a few problems you don't understand. You might even try again and again but no matter how hard you try, it is worded so strangely or there was a typo that throws the entire problem off. This stresses out the students who have to get the answer because if they don't they will get HPR. If you can't get the answer, you're not benefiting from the homework. Finally, sometimes there is just too much homework to ever comprehend with. Some kids go home start their homework and spend lots of time laboring over it. I can connect with them because it gets hard having homework in up to six subjects! I will never understand how the school systems don't see how it's too much work.…
