Homework: More harm than good?
Homework: Does It Do More Harm than good?

What does the word “homework” mean to you? To some kids when they hear that word they despise it. Everyone has tried to explain to students how important homework is. Homework is defined as an out of class task assigned to students to help them practice and prepare for their future, on top of the work they did in class that day. But what people don’t seem to understand is homework is more harmful than it is helpful.
Homework can be very stressful and frustrating to the students. Too much stress can cause the students to get answers off their friend or internet instead of using up any more of their time trying to finish it. This will not benefit the students because they would not obtain the information from the homework, making the homework pointless. Teachers don’t seem to understand that their homework is not the only homework the students must do to turn in the next day. It can be very hard on the students to finish all assignments in one night. “It limits the amount of free time a student has; it affects a student’s social life, and it takes away time in which more productive things can get done.” (Homework: harmful or helpful, N.P.)
Many students play sports, some more than one. During sports, students have practices and games that can last for hours at a time. They don’t only have to juggle games, but also homework, which can be very time consuming. One assignment can take up to an hour to do. Students can be up until 11 or even midnight finishing homework. It hurts the amount of sleep they get, how attentive they are the next day, and how much they obtain during the long classes. Homework also causes students to stay in their room, and be less sociable with their family. Students who don't get to spend time with their family, such as eating dinner with them, have a higher risk of depression than most students.
Many other opinions on the matter, is that homework’s more helpful to students. Homework is a part

High school students are required to attend seven hours of school, five days a week, until they’ve completed 12 years of education. In addition, students are expected to complete schoolwork after the hours of school. This homework given to students is often viewed as an undesirable task. Students have the right to enjoy their leisure time after completing seven hours of brain draining school and not have to complete any more exhausting schoolwork. However, this is not the case. After enduring long hours at school, students are assigned homework every night and are expected to complete these tedious tasks by next class. Homework can take up to hours, sometimes even days to complete. It extracts all the energy from these fatigued students, leaving no energy left for physical exercise leading to the idea of unhealthy matters. In order to prove this, let the facts be told.…

    Rant on Homework

Moreover, homework isn't only wasting the student's time but the teachers time as well. By marking and grading homework, teachers are wasting their time. So teachers, please don't blame us the we wasted your time. Some people assume that homework is useful for teachers to watch student's progress but I firmly believe that homework is sent home to test the parents, not the children. I think that teachers can watch the student's progress in school better because teachers don't know that at home who did the homework, the parent, the student or the internet (Google)??????? People also think that homework helps parents to understand that the school holds high goals for students. But, I consider that school work is harder than homework and that means that parents can understand that the school holds higher goals than they think. Furthermore, homework becomes terrible if no one can help you. If no one can help you then you are doing work that you don’t understand, and if you don’t understand it what’s the point having the work that you can’t even do. I really, strongly believe that more kids would stay in school and have a better learning experience if they did not have the stress of homework.…

Many students do extracurricular activities, and they devote a lot of time to these activities. However, as shown by both Alfie Kohn, a school principal, the current amount of homework assigned is enough so that the average student without extracurricular activities complain about being sleep deprived. Homework doesn’t leave any time for extracurricular activities. Kids who do extracurricular activities often devote more effort to those activities than homework. Of course, many adults will argue that if the kids can’t handle the work, they should quit the sport or class; school is more important. But this isn’t the case. The kids are right to take their sports more seriously than homework. In senior year of high school, when they apply for colleges, these activities will do more for them than a perfect track record with homework. Their special skills in sports will draw attention from recruiters after college. In the end, extracurricular activities will bring you farther than doing homework, but doing homework takes up the time needed for extracurricular…

Finally, homework is very demanding on kids. “In most U.S schools, homework has become more demanding and time-consuming (scope magazine, pages 20-21, lines 33-35). Studies have shown that most kids feel very stressed about schoolwork and homework. There is a lot of pressure to do well in school. Some kids feel like “if they don’t get help from their parents, they will be at a competitive disadvantage with classmates who do.” (scope magazine, pages 20-21, lines 69-72).…

Students have extracurricular activated two to three times a week or more even. An extracurricular activity takes a lot of time out of the afternoon. Sports can take up to 3 hours or more each day. Then students don’t have a lot of time to do homework, eat dinner, take a shower, or even go to church because it could be seven or eight o’clock before they get home. Most of the time extracurricular activities can make people tired. In activities, students have to work hard to be good at the activity, so students can get really lazy with not doing their homework or doing it in the class before. Someone anonymous says:…

First of all, the biggest reason why students don’t do their homework is because it takes up their time from other activities. Sometimes it’s just that they don’t have enough time for the particular subject. Well for some students, just simply having to do the work is a bad reason for them. A reason for that is having assignments from school tame up personal time. One of the serious reasons now-a-days is that some children/students get seriously frustrated when doing the work just because they…

How are they supposed to complete hours worth of homework, as well as complete other activities that they are committed to? And on top of that, the student is expected to have at least 8 hours of sleep per day. Homework is preventing students from leading an active lifestyle, which therefore is harmful to their bodies. According to Stats Canada, about 72% of parents found that homework was often a source of household stress (Survey of Canadian Attitudes toward Learning). That is due to the fact that students are put under great pressure from teachers and parents. Unnecessary assignments could raise the stress level of the student, which can potentially lower productivity and performance, rather than raise it. Distress, which is stress that continues without relief, can lead to symptoms such as headaches, migraines, and high blood…

At a young age a child should not be stressed. In other words, children could just become tired and tired of staying up all night doing homework. Jessica Lahey, the author of “I Hate Homework. I Assign It Anyway.” says “In her film, Ms. Abeles claims that today’s untenable and increasing homework load drives students to cheating, mental illness and suicide.” (Page 1). Children should not have to think about things like this because choices like that can affect their whole life. This will make them do anything to try and get homework out of the way. The stress factor is very large with children dealing with homework and this may cause even students from top schools to become frustrated. Jessica Lahey states in her article, “Even elite private schools in New York City are vowing to lighten their homework load.” (Page 1). This is very important to note because elite schools are obviously expected to give a lot of homework. If they’re willing to lower their homework then that must mean that even top students probably feel that all that homework is too much for them. The bottom line is that homework can cause children to make bad decisions and create more problems than what they seem to have. It may also hinder academic success because the bad decisions, if made, can cause that child to have too much on his or her mind to even pay attention to how well they’re doing in…

Homework does not have academic benefits for students. First off, homework is busy work and doesn't reflect class work. Kohn states in “Truth”, students who do not understand what's going on in class homework can make them feel stupid and they can get accustomed to doing the subject wrong. While on the other hand, other students could understand what they are doing and the practice is just a waste of time. The information shown proves homework does not have benefits for either spectrum of the students. Either homework makes the student feel stupid or is just pointless practice. In addition, Rhodes and Wilson state that Pasi reports students might not complete homework that they feel are routine and boring. Repetitive worksheets and handouts…

    Homework Is Harmful

In support of the view of homework as helpful, many educators stress that specifically aligning homework to the learning task is part of the strategy for building understanding. The website Focus on Effectiveness cites several studies showing that in elementary school, homework helps build learning and study habits (Cooper, 1989; Cooper, Lindsay, Nye, & Greathouse, 1998; Gorges & Elliot, 1999). Also noted is the point that 30 minutes of daily homework in high school can increase a student’s GPA up to half a point (Keith 1992). Many students need time and experience to develop the study habits that support learning, and homework can provide that as well as the ability to cope with mistakes and difficulty (Bempechat, 2004). Those teachers who take the time to add instructive comments to their feedback to homework get the greatest return on their efforts in after-school work. (Walberg, 1999).…
