In Madeline L’Engles “A Wrinkle In Time”, the use of dark and light throughout the book are striking symbols of good and evil, as read in described images, details, and diction. Dark and light are described, creating vivid imagery. “ The shadow was still there, dark and dreadful.”(44) In reading this, something evil comes to mind. “ The light spread out and where it touched the darkness, the darkness disappeared.”(57) Strong images of light beating dark are shown in this sentence. Descriptive details are used throughout the story, portraying the dark as evil, and the light as good. “ A star giving up its life in battle with the thing. It won, oh, yes, my children it won.”(57) “ What could there be about a shadow that was so terrible that she knew that there had never been before, or ever would be again, anything that would chill her with a fear beyond shuddering, Beyond crying or screaming, beyond the possibility of comfort?”(44) Details are continuously setting the scene, dark vs. light. Several statements within the story, elude to dark being evil and light being good. “ Good helps us, the stars help us, perhaps what you would call light helps us, love helps us.”(118) Meg thinks that light helps build us up. “Make it go away Mrs. Whatsit, he whispered. Make it go away, it’s evil.”(44) Calvin believes the darkness tears us down and is evil.
Dark and light continually show importance in the story; they are constant symbols. Dark and light throughout the book show they are enemies, and in the end, the battle between them proves the light to be triumphant.

The contrasts between light and dark help show the invisible man's evolving understanding of the concept that the people of the world need to be shown their true ways. The invisible man becomes aware of the world's truth through time and only then is he able to fully understand the world in times of light. The idea that he “needs light” and “desires light” reflect his internal need for success and his misery at the life of injustice he has been dealt. The themes of isolation, hopelessness and insanity are heightened greatly through the use of imagery and allusions. As the opening of the poem originates at midnight ‘the gloomiest’ time of the night with the only source of light irradiating from the moon, the only things can be seen through the moonlight indicating the importance of the moon. In a traditional sense, the moon was seen to represent the womanly grace associated with physic, intuitive and mysteriousness yet also in a way presenting a dark nature welded in a realm between the conscious and the unconscious. The fragile wordings embody the compassionate feats of the feminine and motherly side of the moon as she tenderly ‘smooths the hair of the grass.’ However there is a radical change in tone as ‘A washed-out smallpox cracks her face.’ As this line is ambiguous as to whether the persona was referring to the moon or a woman’s facial features or perhaps both. However in the artwork, a depiction of a crescent moon illuminates to a different notion of the beginning of a renewal cyclic change.…

Chapter 1: In the first chapter there are numerous mentionings of light especially when describing characters. Plath uses the image of electricity when new people or situations are discussed; “they electrocuted the Rosenbergs” (Plath 1) and with Doreen’s clothes “stuck to her like some kind of electricity” (Plath 5). These images have a punch and vibrancy to them, they purposefully impactful as to impart a sense of importance onto the reader. Plath also uses light to introduce settings as Esther describes “It was so dark in the bar” (Plath 10). Other recurring shimmering images are the bright descriptions of drinks being “clear and pure” (Plath 11), Doreen like a “bleached-blond Negress in her white dress” (Plath 11) and Doreen fishing fruit with her “spindly silver spoon” (Plath 12).…

One of the main themes of the Dark Romanticism is nature. Irving describes with detail the nature setting around the characters. In this story Irving says “The swamp was thickly grown with great gloomy pines and hemlocks, some of them ninety feet high, which made it dark at noonday and a retreat for all the owls of the neighborhood”. In this sentence he is describing the setting described as dark, decaying and mystifying. Another theme presented in this story is the presence of the devil. Irving gives the devil human qualities and describes him as a “great black man”, “neither Negro nor Indian”, with a “pair of great red eyes” and with an ax in his shoulder. The devil is said to have various names among the countries and he claims to have witness great battles and conflicts in America. Dark Romantics used images of evil in form of vampires, devils, ghosts and other human-characterized figures. In this case Irving uses the devil as a symbol of evil.…

    4. It can be seen as a metaphorical commentary on the events of the play because when light shines in most movies or plays, it represents how something good has or is about to happen and shines on the character that best exemplifies a good role model. In Macbeth, when Macbeth describes his surroundings by saying “Light Thickens, and the crow/Makes wing to th’ rooky wood.” It’s like now that Macbeth is starting to become evil and manipulative, the light shining on him may seem good however that crow coming done is a sign of something bad about to happen.…
