Health Essay : Stress and Positive Thinking
I grew up in a very strict and traditional family, where the highest of expectations had to be met for ones talents and accomplishments to be noticed. Striving for the best while being courageous and just hoping that one-day I would be able to make my parents proud was one of the most stressful things on my mind. My father always told me that there are only two paths in life that a person can take. He said that one will be a very tough and challenging road with many obstacles but in the end we will find peace and love. The other one will be extremely easy to reach but you will only find pain and poverty. My whole life I've been struggling to be a good daughter, a better student, and a humble individual. I've always been independent and have managed many things on my own and one of my main goals was to always be stress free. Stress is a serious problem that every individual encounters in his or her lifetime. It can be anything from simple stress from school or something major as to huge stress due to a death in the family. Stress can be described as a force from the outside world that affects an individual along with the environment. It can be very hard to cope with stress since it can lead to depression or even suicide along with many other health conditions.
Another way to define stress is that it is a physical response around you that can be due to a threat or just being upset in some way. (Looker, and Gregson pg.23) When our body senses danger it goes into a response mode that is known as the fight-or-flight response. When you perceive a threat, your nervous system responds by releasing a flood of stress hormones, including adrenaline and cortisol. These hormones rouse the body for emergency action. Stress can be a positive thing or a negative thing. When a certain individual is speeding and seeing a car in front of them they have to slam on the breaks.     I want to handle stress in a positive manner and not negatively. It is bad to have negative thoughts while handling stress, for it can cause bad thoughts, such as self harm and suicide. From personal experience, there was a time in which I handled the stress I had in a poor manner. Senior year, I was burdened from the stress of having to deal with my brother who was ill in the hospital, my father with an income that could not help support the family, and a mother who was not understanding of the situation we were going through and blame the entire family’s problems on me. I felt as if my world was crumbling apart and truly believed that I was the cause to the family’s problems. This stress burdened me so much I simply broke. I skipped school and cried my eyes out and let my grades in school drop. I dealt with this stress similarly to Charlie, in which I tried to avoid the problem and not tell anyone. With this, I only realized that it was not going to help the situation and it could not improve. It was not until I went to seek professional help from the school therapist to help me deal with my stress. I personally wish I could have been like Tillman, who dealt with his stress positively and head on. If I had done so, I could have improved the relationship and problems within my family…

    Stress could be defined as a normal physiological response by the body to situations or stimuli which the brain perceives as dangerous or threatening to the body. The body is a complex system and over time developed a way of responding that was designed to keep us safe. Our subconscious mind is alert for anything that might threaten our well being and when the brain perceives a threat a physiological response occurs that prepares us to either fight or run. This response is caused by a release of adrenocorticotrophic releasing hormone being released from the hypothalamus which then stimulates the pituitary gland to secret the adrenocorticotrophic hormone. This is turn then stimulates the adrenal glands to release adrenaline and cortisol. The release of these hormones cause a number of changes in the body to prepare for us to either fight whatever is threatening us or flight , ie run away to safety. The heart starts beating faster to pump oxygenated blood round the body faster to all the muscles. The blood pressure rises to assist in the movement of blood. Blood is diverted from less vital organs, such as the stomach, and the respiratory rate increases to get more oxygen into the body. Our senses also become more acute. For example, pupils dilate to allow in more light and hearing becomes more sensitive. Once these and other changes have taken place, the body is then ready to tackle the threat. Our ancestors faced stressful situations frequently and were required to fight or run to stay alive. In current times, we may not have to fight or run to be safe, but our brains still respond to perceived threats in the same way. We all suffer from stress at some…
