Health and Social Care Misuse of Substances
Smoking/alcohol and other substance dependency:
People can start smoking for a variety of reasons. The younger generation are especially vulnerable because of their peers promoting that smoking is cool and 'grown up'. People believe that smoking helps them feel more relaxed and can cope better with stress but the nicotine in the cigarettes, is a stimulant not a relaxant, so it doesn’t help stress at all. The feeling that people are ‘claiming’ to be relaxed is more likely to be relief from their craving or withdrawal symptoms.
Exercise:
People exercise for many reasons; to lose/maintain weight, to tone, for the feeling of adrenaline and for the health benefits. Heart disease and strokes, high blood pressure, noninsulin-dependent diabetes, obesity, back pain and osteoporosis can be protected if regular exercise is maintained and can improve your mood and help you to better manage stress.
Eating behaviour:
People might start to eat healthy so that they can feel better about themselves, not only in their mind, but in their body too. People in this society might see eating healthy as a choir and ‘too much effort’ so they just snack and eat unhealthy foods. Junk foods, such as McDonalds are more appealing to youth, and could be seen as an easy option, whereas the older generation would prefer to cook a ‘proper’ meal.
Child birth:
C-sections are more common with childbirth as we now have the medical equipment and knowledge the carry them through without many complications happening. People choose to have C-sections as they believe it is less painful than natural childbirth. Doctors don’t recommend C-sections as they say that it is a dangerous procedure and can severely effect stomach muscles and can lead to further complications.
