1. Briefly describe the symbolism of Scout’s nickname and how it is appropriate.
Scout is a curious person, always asking too much questions. Scout is stubborn, always thinks she is right. Scout also likes to examine things and try everything.
2. What does Jem’s response to Scout’s chewing the gum tell the reader about his feelings for her?
Jem’s response towards Scout shows the reader that he looks after her and really cares for his younger sister. He does not want her to pick things and put in her mouth, he was scared that she can get sick by doing so.
3. What is Lee’s intent by having Scout say: “…As for me, I knew nothing except what I gathered from Time magazine and reading everything I could lay hands on at home, but as I inched sluggishly along the treadmill of the Maycomb County school system, I could not help receiving the impression that I was being cheated out f something. Out of what I knew not, yet I did not believe that twelve years of unrelieved boredom was exactly what the state had in mind for me.” (pp. 43 – 44) Lee’s intent by having Scout saying this is, Scout already knows the lessons of the school system they are teaching the first grades. Scout is bored in school and thinks that she will never learn anything more. She wants to stop going to school and learn on her own as her father and uncle did.
4. What do Scout’s reasons for wanting to stop the game foreshadow? The first reason for Scout wanting to quit the game happened the day she rolled into the Radley front yard. She heard someone laughing inside the house. Atticus’s arrival was the second reason she wanted to quit the game.

5. What literary device is Lee using in the following quotation? “…some tinfoil was sticking in a knot hole just above my eye level, winking at me in the afternoon sun.” (p. 44)

    Harper Lee uses Scout to represent a new generation of people who are willing to push the boundaries of social normalities, fight for justice and accept that “there’s only one type of folk. Folk” even if it means going against the wishes of society. She as well as many other children of the time are being taught to think independently, which creates a sense of hope, as these children are the future forefronts of Maycomb society. This is proven when the verdict at the end of the court case seemed strikingly unfair to Scout, who was able to make herself colour and class blind in order to develop her own understanding of the events occurring in Maycomb.
