1. Describe the shape of the subcontinent of India. How has the geography and climate affected the development of Indian culture? The subcontinent of India was surrounded largely by ocean due to its location on the edge of the continent. The Hymalayn mountains and two rivers blocked the majority of intrances through land travel. This lead the people living there to be less affected by other cultures and mostly protected from invasion.
2. What does Ganga Ma mean? Ganga Ma means Goddess of river Ganges. She is seen to be a mother figure who is tangible, aprochable, and all accepting, she is also called described as compassion in liquid form.
3. Note some important facets of the Harappa culture (Indus Valley Civilization). The Harappa culture was very advanced for an acient civilization, it had straight mapped roads that were planned like modern roads. The homes were two story homes that had indoor plumbing systems. The people of this ancient civilization also had a written language, unforchanately this language has yet to be dicifiered.
4. What are Vedas? Sanskrit? The Vedas are the original scriptures of the Hindu religion, the are considered the most sacred writings in India. Sanskrit is the primary liturgical language of Hinduism. It is considered a philisofical language and is used in many of the Hindu writings.
5. Who are Aryans? The Aryans are a racial grouping that was commonly used in the earlier centuries to describe caucasuan people.
6. Explain the “Aryan invasion theory.” The Aryan invasion theory is a weak theroy that attempts to explain how the Indus Valley Civilization was wiped out. The theroy states that a large invasion of the Aryan people drove out the Indus Valley Civilizasion and then left shortly after.
7. Explain the “Aryan migration theory.” The Aryan migration theroy is a stronger theory that is more likey to have occured. This theory states that the Aryan people gradualy migrated in after

    Aryans were an important role in Indian politics and social structure. Aryans’ brought the Varnas which was an early version of the caste system. The Aryans put themselves as the upper class to make them powerful over the native Indians. Later in history, Chandragupta Mauryan gained power along the Ganges River and created the first dynasty which was the Mauryan Dynasty. Chandragupta’s way of ruling made him rely on ruler’s personal and military power. His grandson Ashoka, governed two provinces. He extended the land to the southern tip by fighting which showed that he was blood thirsty. Later, the Guptas came and developed a tax system and made the caste system in a way that various races could live with each other without conflict. The caste system in India was the social pyramid and consists of priests (brahman); warriors and rulers (kshatriyas); skilled traders, merchants and minor officials (vaisyas); unskilled workers (sudras) and the untouchables (pariah).
