Graphic Design and Book Jacket Analysis
Project 15 – Redesign a Book Cover

Objective: Using Adobe Photoshop, design a new cover for one of the books you discussed in the “Book Jacket Analysis” assignment.

Instructions:
1. Pick one of the books you analyzed in Assignment 9 – Book Jacket Analysis. Pick the book which you believe has the WORST cover of the two.

2. When you create your own cover for that book using Adobe Photoshop.

3. Refer to the techniques discussed about book jackets.

4. As a reminder, a cover will: catch the reader’s attention, give an indication what the story is about, or a “feel” for a story, and will NOT give away the ending.

5. Your cover can be balanced between text and graphics, or graphics dominated (NO text only cover).

6. You only have to design a cover – not a spine or back cover.

7. Your cover is to include the author and title. USE YOUR CREATIVITY.

8. Make your cover 8.5 by 11 inches at 72 ppi.

9. Save your file as a JPEG and name it lastnamecover (where lastname is your last name).

10. Upload your file to the Drop Box folder on the class server.

However, if using multiple images, keep them connected both through alignment and proximity – (grouping the images so that they form a single visual unit and aligning them in a similar fashion.) 3. Keep Odd or Even Elements in Balance Creating the right balance is both about the number of text and graphics elements and how they are arranged on the page. Odd numbers tend to create a more dynamic layout. Use an odd number of visuals, odd numbers of text columns. Or, create a dynamic layout with an asymmetrical arrangement of elements. 4. Divide the Page Into Thirds Related to balance, the rule of thirds suggests that a more pleasing composition is possible if your arrangement of text and graphics can be placed using one of these…

Through researching different writing techniques I have come to realize how many different approaches there are. Everyone seems to have a different approach on how they feel students best learn to write. In the following paper I will discuss each of the techniques, how I feel that they affect students and I feel works best. I also will be discussing Graphic Design and how it is affected by writing research papers. Graphic design sections in books stores and libraries are filled with sets of average compilations of designed stuff. These publications contain hundreds or thousands of visual examples with little or no explanations. They, lack any substantial content that provides insight into the designs themselves. The viewer of such books walks away with an overwhelming amount of visual information and no understanding of the intent, research or significance of the designed items. Unfortunately though, design students gravitate toward such ensembles. Students are drawn to new trends and techniques rather than functionality and meaning.…
