Negotiations

Goal Statement #1 I believe that the power of negotiation is one of the most divine that one can possess. With a solid set of negotiation skills, I believe I could squeeze a lot more out of opportunities to come, and I mean this in more ways than one. There have been various negotiations throughout my life. Some have been from the stroke of luck; others were assisted by me being very persistent. That leads me to believe that a process, rather a structure, can be had when it comes to negotiating. I remember throughout high school, I had a couple of negotiations with woman. I like to think of it as a negotiation because both parties are agreeing to an action. I believe all of this “negotiating” helped me harness at least part of my skill. I recently applied for a job that required daily negotiating! Before I attended Rutgers, I was a car salesman full-time. Needless to say I was negotiation every day. Something about the negotiation excited me, not in a sense that I liked to haggle but in a sense that I enjoyed the ability to push the situation to my favor. This is where I mention a structure in the negotiation and how I believe that it helped me become a better negotiator. My strength would be in the preparation of the negotiation. I can remember every time a customer came in to my dealership, I had a list of cars that would be suitable to their needs. I had a plan to not only sell them but to win their repeat business. I was told by many that the negotiation process was effortless and they felt very comfortable around me when doing so. A weakness of mine may be a direct variable of my strength. The process of negotiation throughout my work may have been effortless for the customer which may have worked to my advantage in the long-run but I believe that I could have squeezed a lot more on my end by negotiating a bit more. I believe this could have been accomplished without

Negotiation involves a two-way communication and the outcome is influenced by the mindset, abilities, and techniques used by the parties of the negotiation. One guideline to the outcome of any negotiation is dependent upon getting the timing right. To achieve this try to organize and plan the circumstances for the negotiation beforehand. This also involves considering the possible outcomes of the negotiation to better understanding the variables that are most important. A second guideline during negotiation would be for all parties to evaluate themselves. A third guideline is to know what you are getting into and who you are dealing with. Another guideline is to be attentive and learn to listen well. Keep in mind that negotiating has to be a two-way communication to be effective - it will never work if the discussion is one- way traffic. The last guideline is to be willing to walk away by never being pressured to win a negotiation.…

As you will see from my report I chose not to separate my strengths and weaknesses into totally different categories. I chose this approach because I learned, through the workshop, that my strengths and weaknesses were often intertwined and without having a clear strategy and a true understanding of the entire negotiating process and possibilities, instead choosing to focus on what I believed was a strength would unknowingly create or expose a weakness. I have since learned that unless I look at the big picture and consider all factors, multiple view points and options that any perceived strengths rarely helped me achieve an optimal agreement for my company or the other parties involved.…

Negotiation is a process in which individuals with differing viewpoints work together to come up with a solution that can work for both parties. Negotiation is a huge part of our everyday live. It is also one of the most effective means of decision making. Conflicts arise constantly and people deal with them in all sorts of ways from legal actions to going to war. These conflicts can be anything from what’s for breakfast to a custody battle. There are no limits in life to where a negotiation can come in to place. I myself have had to of the biggest negotiations in my life in the past year. They were getting divorced and purchasing my first car on my own. While the divorce may be a little personal it is a prime example of a negotiation. Through respective legal parties we had to wager out to whom our items we had accumulated would go. We used every step of the typical negotiation process. Together we had a house, three vehicles, a checking account, and savings account to split up. First, the initial stage, we met with our own individual lawyers and gathered information on the other party. Next, the middle stage, we came up with our offer, negotiated, and finally agreed upon a deal. Lastly, the final stage, we made everything legal. Luckily my situation was simple where in the end we came to an agreement where we both got everything we wanted and parted ways happily. Most negotiations aren’t this simple or easily played. Both parties like to play subtle games with each other called shadow negotiation to sort of physic each other out. Some of these games are strategic moves, strategic turns, and appreciative moves.…

As a negotiator, a few of my strengths include being a good listener with a calm composure and positive attitude. I have the ability to make my opponent feel at ease by being patient and attentive, and breaking the ice when needed with the use of humor. In negotiations I recognize an opportunity to form alliances and build subconscious trust. Additionally, being married for almost 3 years has helped me become a better negotiator as well. My public speaking experiences and technical paper writing projects help me find the right words to use when speaking. Furthermore, being is sales has afforded me the opportunity to discuss and watch others negotiate and argue points on price and technology. As a team player, it has helped me understand the concepts of group dynamics and being persistence. I try to make their professional interaction with me enjoyable in order to create a win-win environment. Negotiation approaches are generally described as either distributive or integrative. At the heart of each strategy is a measurement of conflict between each party’s desired outcomes. Consider the following situation. Chris, an entrepreneur, is starting a new business that will occupy most of his free time for the near future. Living in a fancy new development, Chris is concerned that his new business will prevent him from taking care of his lawn, which has strict requirements under neighborhood rules. Not wanting to upset his neighbors, Chris decides to hire Matt to cut his grass.…

An example of a negotiation situation I have participated in is the sale of 400 school bus tires. I was working with a local dealer in Virginia that just lost the contract with a local school district. I attended a trade show event with this dealer and met with the decision makers that explained to me that another dealer and manufacturer beat our price for the upcoming school year. This resulted in the competitor winning the contract. The breakdown came because my company could not hold the current price through the end of the school year; I could only hold it for another quarter. That was not going to work for them because the funds for the budget were not available until the month after the end of the quarter. I got the pricing extended for an additional 30 days as long as they took delivery of the tires during that time. I figured this would not…

The first thing you should know about negotiating is that everything is fair game, not just cars and houses. At stores, we tend to look at price tags and presume that the offer is final. It rarely ever is. At the very minimum, you should always ask the clerk if they have any coupons available or if any other discounts apply.…
