Part A:

Describe how to introduce the concept of surface area of a cube to students in grades 5 and 6.

I would introduce the concept of surface area of a cube to 5th and 6th grade students by starting off the lesson with a visual representation. I would place a picture of a cube at the front of the class and explain to students that all sides are equal. I would take out a ruler and measure the sides so that students understand that the sides are equal. The picture would be as follows:

I would then explain to the students that if the sides are equal, the measurements from one side can be applied to the other equal sides. I would then explain that the surface area of a cube is made up of the resulting areas of the 6 faces within the cube. After explaining this concept I would tell students that to find the area of only one of the six faces

Once the students have created a 3 dimensional cube they will determine the surface area of it. I will have the students write the value of one side of the cube directly on their cube. The value of a given side will be 5. The students will then be required to find the surface area using the given formula:

surface area= 6s^2

The students must show all of their work, and will get this answer if completed correctly:

surface area= 6s^2 surface area= 6(5)^2 surface area= 6 x 25 surface area= 150
