The experiment performed investigated if Dugesia prefer light or dark situations. Our group hypothesized that Dugesia would prefer the darker side of the petri dish more that the light side. This hypothesis was based on observations of the planarians before the experiment and the type of environment Dugesia are found in. We also noticed that the planarians preferred the edge of the dish, the most which is where the cover is the thickest allowing the least light through. We thought that the darker side would draw the most planarians.…

Lumbriculus variegatus, or blackworms, are part of the segmented worms called annelids. The body is organized into repeated segments. It has a closed circulatory system, similar to humans because the blood is contained within blood vessels. Two major blood vessels, the ventral and dorsal vessels, run straight from the head to the tail, and several vessels connect the two in the anterior segments. The dorsal blood vessel acts similar to the heart, pumping the blood through wavelike contractions of its muscular walls. Blackworms have bright, red blood because of the presence of a hemoglobin-like pigment, erythrocruorin, which transports oxygen. Because the body wall of the worm is transparent, the blackworm’s pulse is visible as the dorsal…

We obtained the flatworms used in this experiment by first placing a few drops of spring water on a petri dish so that the flatworms will be able to survive a couple of weeks, and not be dehydrated. Next, we used a pipette to gather the flatworm and then placed the worm on the petri dish, with the spring water. Using a razor blade, the worm was cut in half into two sections of 6mm in length and 5 mm in length. The worms were measured using a ruler, and examined under a microscope. I tried to measure the worms under the microscope, next to the ruler, to obtain the best measurement but as the worms moved sporadically and were not always fully extended this proved tough to do. So instead it was necessary to just eye ball the measurement of the worms, next to the ruler, when the worms were at maximum extension.…

Feather Duster Worm come from the Sabellidae family and can also be known as Tube Worms and Fan Worms. They live in tubes that they build themselves with mucus that are often attached to rock or coral. Feather duster worms can be located in all different depths of the ocean as far down as 150 ft. in depth. They can live alone or in groups with some other sea creatures such as coral, other marine worms and anemones. Their feathery tentacles are used to capture any type of plankton they happen to pass by. The tentacles then move any food it catches to the worm’s mouth. The flowery top retracts whenever it is feeling threated. If a hungry fish manages to eat a tentacle before it retracts they have the ability regrow a new one.…

When I came back the following week, I observed that both segments had grown at the same rate of 2 extra millimeters, and their seemed to be a head forming on the bottom half, but I wasn’t quite sure. The following week after that, the top half had grown faster, up to 10 millimeters. While the bottom half had only grown 1 millimeter extra, making it 6 millimeters in length. At this point they both had prominent heads that I could see, and this fascinated me, because I was not expected this outcome at all! I was not even expecting these things to grow, and I was very skeptical. I had heard they could grow two head and I thought “That’s crazy and not going to happen!”. It was as if my worm had had an…
