There were myriad of safety milestones over the past 200 years that have significantly affected the safety movement. The Health and Morals of Apprentices Act was passed in 1802 and was considered a milestone piece of legislation s it marked the beginning of government involvement in workplace safety. Other significant events that occurred in the 19th century were the first patented barrier safeguard in 1868, the creation of the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 1869 and the passage of the Employer’s Liability Law in 1877. In the 20th Century, we saw a significant development in the safety movement in 1908 with the establishment of an early form of workers compensation that was introduced in the United States. In addition, the National Safety Council was established in Chicago in 1913 (initially this was called the National Council of Industrial Safety). Many other significant milestones occurred during the past 200 years of the safety movement; however, the most significant was the passing of the federal Occupational Safety and Health Act in 1970. Organized labor has played a significant role in the development and maturation of the safety movement in the US. It was due to the hard fought battles of this movement that lead to safer working conditions and appropriate compensation for workers who were injured on the job.
