Extrusive rocks are also called volcanic rocks and extrusive rocks are formed on the earth’s surface. Extrusive rocks also form from magma, but a form of lava. Magma flows onto the earth’s surface by an eruption by a volcano. When the magma hits the earth’s surface, the magma turns into lava. Extrusive rocks are formed by lava, and the lava will harden quickly and crystallize quickly, either by hot spots or on the earth’s surface. Igneous rocks are considered felsic, intermediate, mafic, and ultramafic. Felsic rocks are high in silica, and usually light colored, and an extrusive rock, which is felsic, is rhyolite. Intermediate rocks are…
Sediments can form from pre existing rocks, they collect and undergo a process called lithification, then form layered rocks…

The Rock Cycle: Earths materials pass as they are transformed from one major rock type to another. Rock: An aggregate of Minerals: which are naturally occurring inorganic,…
Sediment- Material (such as gravel, sand, mud, and lime) that is transported and deposited by wind, water, ice, or gravity; material that is precipitated from solution; deposits of organic origin (such as coal and coral reefs).…
Course Description This course gives an overview of physical geology by introducing concepts such as plate tectonics and geologic time. Students gain familiarity with the processes that shape the Earth’s surface and recognize the relevance of studying geology. Topics include the rock cycle, weathering, formation of geological features, and preservation of geological resources. The weekly labs add a practical component to the class. The labs build upon the concepts in the text and offer a chance to interact with the material and further their understanding. Policies Faculty and students/learners will be held responsible for understanding and adhering to all policies contained within the following two documents: University policies: You must be logged into the student website to view this document. Instructor policies: This document is posted in the Course Materials forum. University policies are subject to change. Be sure to read the policies at the beginning of each class. Policies may be slightly different depending on the modality in which you attend class. If you have recently changed modalities, read the policies governing your current class modality. Weathering- is a process where rocks are physically broken down or chemically modified by climatic or biological elements. Works through 3 processes: physical weathering, chemical weathering and biological weathering.…
When I started collecting rocks as a hobby a couple years ago, I found that there are many different types of rocks. Just not only the shape, texture, colour and size, but also where the rock originates from. The three different types of rocks are igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. Igneous rocks are the rocks that are formed by cooled lava. Sedimentary rocks are made up of grains of sand, mud and pebbles compressed and formed after many years later. Metamorphic rocks are changed rocks under heat and pressure.…
Metamorphic rocks are formed when either igneous or sedimentary rocks are changed by heat and/or pressure. These conditions may arise during mountain building processes. Buried rocks may be subjected to high temperatures and may be squeezed or folded, causing the minerals in the rocks to recrystallize and form new minerals. Another way that metamorphic are formed is when rocks surrounding a hot igneous mass are baked by the extreme temperatures. Schist is a medium grained rock that is formed from shale which is a sedimentary rock or mud but at a higher temperature than slate. Schist can form in several different ways. One of the most common ways that is formed is when shale is transformed into slate, then phyllite and then schist. After this transformation schist is changed into gneiss. During this process the clay particles in the shale into micas and increases their size. The micas will finally begin to recrystallize into granular minerals. This appearance of granular minerals is what marks the change into…

Sedimentary rocks are rocks that formed when layers of sediment such as clay, mud, silt, or sand hardened over millions of years. These types of sediments settle down in lakes, swamps and oceans. This is one of the reasons why most fossils are the remains of animals who lived in or near the water.…
Sedimentary rock is a type of rock that is formed by sedimentation of material at the Earth's surface and within bodies of water. Sedimentation is the collective name for processes that cause mineral and/or organic particles (detritus) to settle and accumulate or minerals to precipitate from a solution. Particles that form a sedimentary rock by accumulating are called sediment. Before being deposited, sediment was formed by weathering and erosion in a source area, and then transported to the place of deposition by water, wind, mass movement or glaciers which are called agents of denudation.…
