My interest in traveling to and participating in a study tour of Germany stems most currently from my fervent study and passionate teaching of Advanced Placement (AP) European History; yet the genesis of this interest began decades earlier. In the 1950s my mother grew up in Munich as an Army brat while my grandfather was a full Colonel of the United States Army stationed at U.S. Army Garrison Munich after World War II. The images of my mother ice skating on frozen ponds and my grandfather's collection of beer steins and paintings of German pastoral scenes made me curious about this place half way around the globe. As a teen I traveled to Frankfurt with my father and toured the city on our way to Greece, the land of my ancestors. In Frankfurt am Main I witnessed the striking architecture and impressive industry of the city. In my childhood I sang in choirs and played on the piano the works of the great German composers Beethoven, Brahms and Mozart. Today my cousin who is a U.S. Army Lt. Colonel and his wife are currently stationed in Stuttgart soon to move to Vilseck in the Bavarian region of Germany.…

I would love to visit Berlin because the heart of Germany is there. It’s the capital of the country and approximately all of the tourist attractions are there. Another reason I would want to vacation in Germany when traveling Europe is because my cousin, who goes to West Point Military Academy, went there for his summer break and my grandmother visited Berlin, Munich, and other German cities in the 1970s before the Berlin Wall was knocked down. My grandmother has several stories in regards to it. Consequently, all of their stories about Germany have persuaded me into wanting to travel to Germany. The last reason why Germany would be a fantastic addition to my Europe travels is the Frankfurt Book Fair. This fair would be entertaining to attend because I adore books, I have the opportunity to support booksellers, and I am able buy books I may not be capable to buy anywhere else. When traveling Europe, Germany would be one of the places I would go to because of Berlin, my relatives’ adventures, and the Frankfurt Book…

To understand what Germany is today, one must understand the generational effect that the Third Reich not only had but continues to have. As Kempe says, “A historian would be hard-pressed to find a country where a mere dozen years of history, between 1933 and 1945, has cast such a long shadow.” Even though the Third Reich lost its power more than half a century ago, its effects on German culture and politics still stand firm. The effects can be seen in Germany’s idea of national pride and identity, race relations between Germans and German Jews, and Germany’s relationship with the international community of Europe that it fought a horrific, long, and bloody war against.…

Germany and the U.S can be different in many ways. German culture is very unique and fascinating. As the U.S shares very many different types of traditions and holidays that some might not agree with or celebrate. For instance, in German bathrooms they have attendants to help you with your needs, and to clean. If you walked into a public bathroom in the U.S you might expect a very dirty & smelly & vandalised bathroom. Germany is very developed at the moment and you can see that when you take a look at a population pyramid of their country. As…
