Gender Differences In Aggression
Previous research concerning peer aggression has been conducted under the assumption that women rarely display aggression; therefore, aggressive behavior has historically been viewed as a male phenomenon (Björkqvist, 1994). Recently, many researchers have challenged the gender bias in the existence of aggressive behaviors and have broadened the definition of aggression. Björkqvist's research suggests sex differences exist in the quality of the aggression, but not the quantity. According to Paquette and Underwood (1999), an adolescent's expression of anger and contempt for peers can sometimes be expressed through physical aggression, manipulation, exclusion, and/or gossip. This broader definition allows for a more complete understanding of the social or relational aggression, which is typically associated with females. Relational aggression is more verbal than physical and very prevalent in today's society.
Gender differences in the prevalence and the form of aggressive behavior used could be explained by the different social roles of females and males. This paper will discuss the different types of aggression and how each type is used within the female and male peer groups.
Aggression has been defined as having five central features: Intention to harm, unprovoked, happens repeatedly, victim perceives the bully as having power, and occurring in small groups. There are two distinct forms of aggression within this definition, overt (physical) and relational (verbal). Crick and Grotpeter (1995) state that the distinction between overt and relational aggression is related to gender. To be specific, the types of aggressive behaviors displayed within peer groups differ between same-sex groups.
It was previously assumed that girls used strictly relational aggression in contrast to boys who primarily used overt forms of aggression. Research shows that levels of overt aggression are higher in males; however, the levels of

    In scenario number one two styles of communication was used. The RN at the psychiatric care group home was very aggressive when she told the aide that his role is to just do what he is told to do and not to think. She used a firm raised voice probably making the aide feel unimportant. Her aggressiveness made him believe that only the RN role is important not his.     To perform this study they chose an all girls parochial school and surveyed 561 girls ages thirteen to seventeen. In this study two forms of victimization were focused on Relational victimization and overt victimization, the first being when a person attempts to harm not the person themselves but their relationship with their peers by for example spreading rumors, the overt victimization pertains to physical violence and threats of it.     This study was conducted by researchers from the School of Social and Family Dynamics at Arizona State University, and was sponsored by a grant from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. The study consisted of 170 children, 91 boys and 79 girls from the ages of 2-5 years old. The researcher’s primary goals in this study were to assess the young boys’ and girls’ dominance-related behaviors as they naturally occurred during interactions with other boys and girls and to find out the probability of being aggressed against by their peers. The researchers used naturalistic observation methods to assess girls’ and boys’ aggressive behaviors; this was done by 40 independent observers who were not told the purpose of the study, they used an adaptation of Fagot and colleagues’ interactive coding system to record behaviors. Prior to beginning the study they observers were sent to the children’s classroom so that they would become accustomed to their presence and not pay attention to them. They then observed the children outside or in the classroom, and obtained 45 successive, 15 minute observations of each child. In conclusion the researchers found that there were similarities as well as differences in the aggressive behavior that occurred between boys and girls of the same gender and of a different gender. They also expressed a need for continued research on how this behavior would continue to affect the children throughout their childhood and into adolescence.…
