Fun in the Sun
Fun in the Sun It was a hot spring day at Myrtle Beach. The sun was scorching hot, setting my skin to tingling. The pool sat waiting, the cool blue water promising a soothing balm to the heat. The plan for my vacation was to kick back, relax and soak up some rays. Unfortunately, my plan did not work out as well as expected. While preparing for my relaxing day, I reached into my luggage and grabbed my sunscreen. Unfortunately, I failed to notice that the date on the lotion had expired. I grabbed my sunglasses and prepared for a day of fun in the sun. Looking back at the situation, the minute detail of checking an expiration date would have been the best choice of my life. While the sun warmed my porcelain white skin, my only thoughts were of the magnificent tan that I would be able to show off on my return to work. I applied a bit of sunscreen and laid back on the chaise lounge for a little cat nap by the pool. Two hours later, I awoke feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. I gathered my things and strolled back to the beach house. I took a long, cool shower and prepared myself for a long awaited dinner. When stepping out of the shower, I felt a tingling sensation on my shoulders. I went to the mirror with excitement to see the beginnings of my tan to come. What I encountered at the mirror was nothing but shock and disbelief. My skin was as red as a ripe apple hanging from a tree ready for the picking! I put on the loosest clothes that I had brought and thought of the pain to come, not the tan. My skin was burned and the pain was overwhelming, to say the least. I was in a state of panic. How could this have happened? I was only out in the sun for two hours and I had sunscreen on. I quickly tore through the room frantically looking for the bottle of sunscreen thinking that I may have just bought the wrong SPF coverage. I recovered the bottle and looked. No, the coverage was SPF 45, one of the best that I could have bought. Then, what was

Tanning means different things to different people. To some it might be a reminder of wonderful memories on the beach, or perhaps a vacation in a nice tropical country. For others it could simply mean a way of taking care of themselves. Some people are lucky enough to have sun all year round to keep them tanned. But what about those of us who do not have the luxury of sun all year round?…

As soon as we got there My Uncle Shaun and I were put on tent duty. We didn’t have a camper, or a houseboat, so the most reasonable option was to bring tents! This side of my family doesn’t go camping much, so I found it very interesting that we were “tenting.” Mostly my uncle set up the tents, since I was about eleven and didn’t like to work. I mean, I still don't, who does? Anyways, because I had my swimming suit on, I found it very appealing to go for a swim. So I stepped in and I did not expect what I got! The water was warm, a whopping 80 degrees fahrenheit! I had never been in water so warm until I came here. Normally we go to lakes/reservoirs it’s usually Island Park, Jensen’s Grove, or American…

Have you ever been tanning? I have been tanning multiple times and I love it. Tanning is defined as “A structure lined with sunlamps in which one stands or reclines in order to acquire a suntan”. Tanning’s purpose as it is defined is to get a tan. Tanning beds are used by people to tan all year around. Men and women are no longer forced to make time to tan outside or to schedule a time around the weather because of tanning beds. Another reason tanning beds are convenient is it only takes a short amount of time to show results when regularly you would have to lay outside for hours before you see results. In this paper, I am going to evaluate tanning where it came from, who invented it, where, and why. Last but not least were going to be looking at the positive and the negative aspects of tanning too.…

The use of tanning beds has become increasingly popular in minors and young adults. Teenagers see celebrities on TV and in magazines with glowing tans, and think they need to have this perfectly bronzed look year round. Some question how they are able to keep their sun kissed skin during the winter. This often leads young adults to visit tanning salons so they can achieve the desired “healthy glow”. After a few sessions in a tanning bed the skin pigment starts to darken toward the desired look, but the risk of skin cancer increase dramatically. In some states, teenagers are willing it break the law in their quest for sun-kissed skin, especially in the middle of a Minnesota winter. It’s important that minors should be not able to go into one of these beds because it dramatically increases their chances to develop skin cancer and has many negative effects later on.…

The suns powerful rays would burn or sunburn the skin. In some cases, people would see changes in their skin collagen. Erythema, which is the reddening of the skin, will also appear on the skin. Actinic or solar keratosis happens when the skin has had very long term exposure to sunlight. When exposed for too long, the skin may burn and peel off. This causes stinging pain and a lot more symptoms to come. The skin will feel hot and maybe even blister (“The risk”). There are other methods in getting a tan that does not require sun or UV rays, but still come with risks.…

For three summers I didn’t come home from my summer job smelling like grease from the local café or fresh cut mowed lawns, but I came home smelling like chlorine and tanning oil. I spent my days in a high lifeguard stand, towering over bathers enforcing rules and watching for drowning victims. I slathered on the tanning oil to get the perfect deep brown tan, and occasionally lifted my polarized sunglasses to double-check the patrons. It’s a hard job, but someone’s got to do it.…

I have chosen sunbathing as I think it is important that people my age know about the long term and short term risks and problems sunbathing can cause, I am interested in this as I think the long term risk is not worth the short term tan and I would like to warn others about the highly dangerous risks that just aren’t worth taking. Although sunbathing can enhance your looks and self confidence, it can be very harmful when not used properly, used too often or used without UV protection creams.…
