on American soil in more than 200 years is not because of our strong military, but because of our armed citizens. Our freedom and right to bear arms is what gives our country its protection. When the Germans invaded France in WWI and WWII they were not meet with large opposition from the civilians, this is because the citizens were not adequately armed. In America we are not faced with the risk of invasion because the invaders would need to fight of or civilian army, for every 100 citizens in America there are estimated to be 113 guns, this ratio scares off foreign invaders. We are given the choice of fighting off any attempt to relinquish our freedom or hand over our freedom to be ruled by a dictator tempting us with safety.
Our freedom of arms is critical to our nation, but it does not stop at protecting us from outside enemies, or freedom also protects us from our own government.
When the second amendment was made, giving us the right to bear arms, the founding fathers wanted the people to have equal arms to the army, they wanted us to be able to fight off our own military. This is because they never wanted America’s government to become tyrannical over it’s people. They wanted A fail-safe so that if the government tried to take away the rights of the people, the people could fight back if left no other option. Throughout history there have been nations whose people were not armed because they did not fear their own government, only to be trun on and wiped out. The most notorious even of this nature was when the Nazi party disarmed the Jewish population giving then no way of fighting back, before throwing them into death camps. Our right to bear arms form a barrier between us and the greed and oppressions of any government. “The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles.” ― Jeff Cooper, Art of the Rifle, Cooper Enforces that evil people or tyrants can and will be stopped if the militia of the people is well armed, but that the people of the militia must still have an eye for freedom. In times of peace this freedom sits dormant, but the knowledge of their existence keeps any tyrannical movements far away from America. This is why the first thing all tyrants do is disarm the civilians and why we should never give up our right to bear
arms.
This is no question that our freedom to bear arms works as a powerful force against tyranny, but it is not the only fighting force we have. We also have our freedom of speech and press. Most people take this freedom for granted, but it means much more than we think. Our freedom of speech uncovers the darkness in our nation, it sheds light on corruption. If we see something wrong, we spread the word. If we are dissatisfied with how our government treats us we can protest. If we think the president elect is an awful person we can go and speak our mind with no fear of retaliation. However there are many nations such as North Korea where the people cannot speak out against the government, if they do they will face anything from jailing to torture. The citizens of these nations cannot protest the government, if they do they may be shot at, or is the case of Tiananmen square they many have military tanks come to “break up” the protest. Here in America our freedom of speech forces the government to change, if we protest against the greed of a manufacture we can have laws changed. The Civil Rights Movement would not have been possible without the freedom of speech. Our freedom of speech is vital to our nation since it gives us the power to stand up against the wrong doing of the government.
We cannot give up or freedom, our freedom is the only thing that keeps us alive. Let us not be the average man who is willing to imprison himself under the false flag of safety, let us use our freedom to fight for our own safety. We are not lambs which the government can heard around and slaughter when they become hungry. A government that is powerful enough to keep us safe without the citizens needing to bear arms is to powerful and can squash us. It is the right and freedom of every citizen to be safe, no matter what the safety is from. If we give up our right to bear arms or our right of free speech we will be turning back the clock to the darkest days where we limp powerless below the dictator. We are not a nation of the governed we are a nation of people, and the people have the freedom to fight oppression.
