The industrial revolution saw mass migration into the main urban, city areas of an area. In order for workers to travel to work and also for factories and mills to deliver their goods transport was developed quickly. This development helped towns and cities grow, and it also helped sport surge in popularity. Teams now had the option, and availability to travel to different towns and play teams from all over the country. In return supporters were also allowed to travel and support their local team or factory team. This meant that more people could see sport and gain interest. This was helpful in encouraging people, which would increase participation levels. The ability to travel quickly and conveniently between towns and cities improved sporting contacts. As teams began to travel and play all over the country, people begin to find that that rules in certain areas were different. This caused much confusion for many of the participants, therefore the next stage in sport was to form untied rules and governing bodies. In 1888 the Football League was inaugurated with 12 founder clubs Accrington, Aston Villa, Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Burnley, Derby County, Everton, Nott’s County, Preston North End, Stoke F.C. (renamed Stoke City in 1928),West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers. This…

The 1850’s saw drastic changes to most of Britain, the major change being the huge increase in urbanisation which was key to the development of association football. This was because the people of the urbanising areas ended up being in small spaces for the sheer number of people there was. This was only enhanced by the movement of rural-urban migration as people sought both work and a new life in the newly growing towns and cities. In the 1860’s -1880’s the Saturday half day was introduced and by the 1880’s everybody was entitled to the Saturday half day, this meant that people had more free time and usually in the Saturday afternoon football was played or watched in the free time they had. Spectators became a very important part of the development of association football as most of the people who wanted to be involved in football were just spectators due to a lack of space and not enough teams, this meant that as more people watched the football on Saturday afternoons facilities such as small terraces were built around the pitch so spectators could watch. This was the development of the earliest stadium although they were very basic at the time. In the mid 1880’s as the quickly industrialising cities became more organised and planned allocated open space was made available to use and the working class used this open space to recreate. This was the first parks. As football became more popular as there was more free time etc, the playing of matches became more regular and there were many old boys teams set up as well as a few other teams. The FA cup was played in 1872 where for 10 years or so the old school boy teams dominated until 1885 where old eatoninans were beaten by Blackburn Olympic. This was a stepping stone for the game of football to blossom to a working class game.…

In 1365 King Edward III banned soccer because of its excessive violence and for military reasons (Toye). In 1572 Queen Elizabeth set laws that could sentence a soccer player to jail for a week followed by an act of penance within the church (Wood). After these forms of prohibition inflicted many issues between the people and the ruling family, soccer became legal in England in 1605(Wood). Following this legalization the diffusion of soccer within the thirteen colonies became greatly wide spread. It began in Jamestown and had reached Harvard in 1827 (Jezek). It later continued to spread throughout the rest of the thirteen colonies. Post-Civil War soccer became greatly popular throughout colleges. By 1863 eleven clubs had met on October twenty sixth, here they formed a football association. This association had laid the foundations for nearly forty modern national association (Toye). Later on November sixth, 1876 Rutgers and Princeton University had engaged in the first intercollegiate soccer match. This match had a profound effect because it led to soccer becoming more wide spread throughout colleges…

Football was putting America in a crisis when the sport first became popular (Majerol 18). Majerol reported that “In 1905, at least 18 high school and college boys died playing the sport, and more than 150 were seriously hurt” (18). Many injuries came because no protective gear was worn and the rules of the game were not strongly enforced (Majerol 18). People had played and gotten injured would suffer from concussions, broken limbs, spines (Majerol 18). The game of football was close to being banned, but former president, Theodore Roosevelt, was a fan of the game and kept football from being outlawed (Majerol 18). By time the 1870s rolled around football had been labeled as a blood sport (Majerol 18). Ordinary roughness in the sport usually…

Football originated from a primitive game of rugby played in America in the 1840s. In 1880, Walter Camp, considered the "Father of American Football," exchanged the traditional rugby scrum for a line of scrimmage. In 1882, the four down system was introduced to negate Princeton and Yale's strategy to hold the ball without trying to score. The following year, Camp reduced the number of players to eleven, and introduced the seven-man offensive line, with a quarterback, two halfbacks, and a full back. The first professional game was played in 1895. The National Football League (NFL) began in the early 1920s. Today, football is one of the most popular sports in the United States.…

American football as we know it originated from rugby played in Britain in the mid-19th century. The person who Americans consider the “Father of American Football” is Walter Camp. Professional football can be traced back to 1982, when there was a $500 contract for the Allegheny Athletic Association and the Pittsburgh Athletic Club to play a game against each other. Originally football was primarily a sport of the Midwestern industrial towns in the United State. In 1902, the American Professional Football Association was formed and two years later the National Football League. The competition was fierce between the two leagues, which led the two leagues to merge. Football eventually became national. When the two leagues merged is when…

    Is There a Sports Law

    • 3546 Words
    • 15 Pages

The existence of the subject ‘Sports Law’ has been debated for a number of years now and there are two different schools of thought with regards to the term ‘Sports Law’. Some commentators refer to ‘Sport and the Law’ arguing that there is currently no topic than can be referred to as ‘Sports Law’. Grayson, who many consider the father of ‘sport and the law’ states that ‘No subject exists which jurisprudentially can be called sports law. As a soundbite headline, shorthand description, it has no juridical foundation; for common law and equity creates no concept of law exclusively relating to sport’ . His view is that there is no separate legal discipline with regards to sport and sporting activity, and that it is only a subject area where normal legal principles are to be applied. However, there are others, mostly academics, who see Sports Law as having developed into a new legal area in its own right; ‘the answer to the argument that sports law is merely law in which the parties happen to be involved in sport, is that the law is now beginning to treat sporting activity, sporting bodies and the resolution of disputes in sport, differently from other activities or bodies. Discrete doctrines are gradually taking shape in the sporting field ... there are now clear signs that the English courts are beginning to treat decisions of sporting bodies as subject to particular principles.’ This quote from Beloff sums up the attitude of courts towards sport and is an indication of the origins of Sports law as its own discipline. Law is applied in many aspects of public and private life, but not every aspect of life has a set of legal rules. However, this development is not unique to sport, and is a process that has happened to many legal areas. Labour or employment law is a subject area that has only achieved relatively recent recognition. It has its origins in…
