Food and Relationships
The Glue to All Relationships There is nothing that brings people closer together then a fantastic meal. Whether it is the recipe, the preparation, the taste, or authenticity, great relationships are built from the process of making food. Holiday traditions, historic traditions, and cultural traditions will bring anyone and everyone together. Food is not just for survival. Food is a way of expressing ourselves. It can express love and feelings towards love ones and even religion. There are those who are so passionate about cooking, that it seems all those around them learn to treat cooking as an art. Food can making relationships that are already formed by choice or by blood, even stronger. Sisters are an excellent example of a relationship that is truly magical. This sibling bond is best exemplified when Kate Delany describes her Sunday morning chats over breakfast with her sister in her poem “Ditching.” Delany says, “Our mother couldn’t understand or wouldn’t— we were hungrier than the Host, had things to talk over” (lines 8-10). This bond over their Sunday breakfast meant more to them than anything. Not even their mother could understand what those pancakes meant to them. It was not just about the food to them, it was about the topics of conversation. Delany goes on to mention some topics of things discussed each week such as a friend on drugs, a broke boyfriend, and even their little sister’s bad health (lines 10-12). This was not just a breakfast for them. This was a time when they would grow together and grow closer to one another. There are a lot of relationships out there that need a lot of work. Some may feel it is a bit cliché, but a relationship between a daughter-in-law and mother-in-law are not always so great. Some mothers of sons can be overbearing and maybe a few might think their son is too good for any woman who comes along. Then there is the story of Gabrielle and Alda Fuortes de Nitto. They have the relationship every daughter-in-law

    When I think about Thanksgiving, the first thing that comes to mind is good food. Every year my mom, Mammaw and I start preparing several homemade dishes a day or two in advance so we can make sure that we have everything prepared. The food is very traditional with Thanksgiving turkey, ham, yams, deviled eggs, stuffing, potato salad and lemon ice box pie. That is our family tradition dessert. Delectable smells, good conversation, and the comfortable atmosphere make Thanksgiving one of my favorite meals of the year.     Even generations ago, my family members realized how difficult it was to fit in time to see distant family members. That’s why since my great grandmother was around, we’ve spent one day during the holiday season participating in what we call The Progressive. As the tradition goes, each family is required to prepare one part of the traditional five course meal, the assignment of which rotates between the families each year.     Siskind continues, “Thanksgiving brings family members back home, physically and emotionally, ritually transforming attenuated ties of kinship into a strong bond” (168).     In her essay, “The Magic of the Family Meal,” Nancy Gibbs, explains the important role of having meals plays on children. Gibbs begins her essay by telling us how valuable having a family meal is and the positive outcome. She believes that having a family meal, more than three times a week, with no interruptions, can have a great power over a family’s communication skills. Gibbs then explains that children who eat meals with their families, are less likely to get into trouble and eat healthier. She writes, “Studies show that the more often families eat together, the less likely kids are to smoke, drink, do drugs, get depressed, develop eating disorders, and consider suicide, and the more likely they are to do well in school, delay having sex, eat their vegetables, learn big words, and know which fork to use”(209-210). Gibbs then starts explore the negative effects of not having family meals. She writes that 45 percent of all family dinners have the TV running at the same time as the meal is being eaten. This is part of the reason kids feel like their parents aren’t proud of them as well as why there is tension among that particular family Gibbs states. She then concludes that back in the day dinner was a very precious event for most U.S. families. Overtime however, Gibbs believes this has dissipated due to social, economic, and technological factors. As a result, families became busier with these factors, which made it harder for families to sit down. “Meanwhile, the message embedded in the microwave was that time spent standing in front of a stove was time wasted,” (211) Says Gibbs. She explores the effects of the fast food business and what role it played in destroying family meals and its importance. Overall Gibbs concludes that every family needs to have an uninterrupted family meal time, whether it be breakfast, lunch, or dinner, family meals are important, and writes, “So pull up a chair.
