FINAL Graduation Speech
Welcome blazers, class of 2014, friends, family, and Blair staff. My name is Nigisti Adane, your class president for the past 3 years. We stand here today in this hall for our gradation. We have here with us today Former Principal Dr. Darryl Williams also known as The Fresh Prince of Blair, our current Principal Mrs. Renay Johnson, Secretary of Labor Mr. Tom Perez, Board of Education’s Mr. Christopher Barclay and our wonderful teachers and staff members.
Now that we are finished with our high school careers, think of this as not the end, it's just the beginning. In a couple of months when most of us embark on our journeys to college or a job, high school, this graduation, and this speech will simply be distant memories. But great ones! I myself will miss the “did you know” section from BNC. For example did you know that our graduating class has two presidential scholars? Or that there’s over 120 clubs at Blair, some of which are entirely student-run, including the Blair Radio Station, Thespian’s club, Debate Team, Jewish Culture Club and Philosophy Club. Many, like the Robotics club and Slam poetry have recently placed in competitions. Did you know that this year the softball, baseball and boy’s basketball team were all division champions?
Throughout our time at Blair, we have acquired the skills to launch ourselves into our futures. There will be challenges of course, and we will meet them straight on. It's not enough to simply try to get by in life. That doesn't move the world forward. You must try to excel in everything you do large or small.
Every accomplishment you achieve adds to the world's progression. When you succeed, you lighten the burden on your fellow man. When you succeed, you are in a position to give rather than to take. We have many notable alumni that have imprinted their soles onto the world. We all know that Goldie Hawn, Carl Bernstein, Steve Francis, Ben Stein all went to Blair. So which one of us will be next on the list of notable alumni?
As Steve Jobs said, "Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary. Stay hungry. Stay foolish"

As someone who immigrated to the states, not knowing much of the English language beyond “I don’t speak English” I myself have gone through great lengths to learn English and be apart of this society we live in. Once the girl who was frightened to read out loud is now giving the commencement speech at graduation. When I first transferred to Montgomery County in the second grade. I had to learn the basics of reading and writing all over again, and start over the ESOL program, but I am grateful for the support of my teachers and family. Ever since elementary school, our parents have cradled us during our worst, forgiven all the stupid mistakes we've made as teenagers, and loved us unconditionally. With their help, we've become responsible adults, and we would not be here today without them.
Many of us are still trying to figure out our identity, goals, and plans for the future. You dream and then follow it up with a list of all the reasons why the dream is unachievable. You fill your life with excuses and "I can't." Many great companies were conceived from a dream, nurtured in a garage or basement and grew to be traded on the New York Stock Exchange. Why not your dream? Stay hungry. Stay foolish. Thank you all very much, Congratulations class of 2014!

Hello students, faculty, and families of BFCCPS. As my classmates and I stand here before you tonight, I imagine we are all thinking very different things. Some of us are excited, others sad, and some scared. Maybe not at this moment, but at some point we have all thought about the time we have spent at BFCCPS and how our years at this unique school have changed us. Whether you arrived as a nervous kindergartener or a confident middle schooler, the opportunities we have been given, and the lessons we have learned have shaped each and every one of us into the people we are today, and more importantly, the people we will become in our futures.…

I was awarded a wonderful education at Windham High School, but beyond the information I retained, I also learned what is important in life. At first, I thought all that mattered was the clothes you wore, what makeup you had on, and who you were friends with. There is more to life than all that. I love helping others and my induction into the National Honor Society allowed me to do just that, especially in my four service projects I had the opportunity to lead and be a part of. I try to please people and make sure they are always happy and I now know it is most important to give back to the community who gave me so much.…

Before I start with my speech, allow me to ask a very simple question. Have you guys ever complaint about your school, your teachers, or being a student? I bet almost 99.9% of you guys said yes. We actually complain a lot, over the smallest things and lack appreciation. And though this ceremony recognizes our efforts, it also recognizes and pays homage to the dedication of our parents and our teachers. We would not have been able to accomplish this much without their help. So today, in honor of all the students, thank you. You know, I never expected to be standing up here but here I am, giving this speech and probably doing a terrible job at it because if you couldn’t tell, I’m pretty nervous. But thanks to NAMS, it pushed me out of my comfort zone and onto this stage in front of all you wonderful people. Succeeding from middle school is no easy task, looking back it surprises me that I even made it this far. A famous author, Theodore Roosevelt, once said, “A man who has never gone to school may steal from a freight car; but if he has a collage education he may steal the whole rail road.” Even though we have a while to get a collage education, we’ve made it here, to the end of 8th grade. Just like a rail road the train has to be set on a good track, just like our education. So far for this 8th grade class, our tracks have been fantastic ever since we first started our journey. Our first stop was 6th grade. New building, new people, and it were a whole new environment. New fears emerged and I remember feeling like a fish out of the sea. The year went by and our next stop was 7th grade, which the teachers have been preparing us for. We came back much more confident than the year before. We looked down at the 6th graders and asked ourselves, “Were we that short just last year?” And by the end of 7th grade, we were on our way to 8th grade. The year started off at a sprint and it seems to have left many of us still trying to catch our breath but 8th grade is also the…

I would like to welcome everyone here today. I would also like to thank the Board of Education, family members, teachers and friends for where the class of 2005 is now. I'd like to start with a quote from the song Celebration by kool and the gang, "There's a party going on right here, a celebration to last throughout the year, so bring your good times and laughter too, we gonna celebrate your party with you, come now let's all celebrate and have a good time, we gonna celebrate and have a good time." Today you are all sitting here on the verge of graduating; some of us are scared, some are overjoyed and some of us are saying hey it's just another day. Well what I am telling you is; take this day for everything that it's worth. This day represents…
