Field Trip Report
Université Laval / INRS-ETE SEG Student Chapter
Local field trip report for 2013-2014
Student in charge of local field trips: Fanny MacMurray-Pinard

Excursion at the Montauban mine (September 21st, 2014)
Montauban is a Zn-rich VMS deposit that has been exploited from 1910 to the 1960s including several gold-rich zones. The deposit is hosted in highly deformed volcanic rocks metamorphosed to the upper amphibolite grade. Part of the deposit is observable on outcrops and a section from the altered footwall to unaltered basalts in the hanging wall has been visited by a group of six student from the Université
Laval and the INRS-ETE. Antoine Caté, Ph.D. student on a metamorphosed VMS deposit lead the tour.
Students have observed a typical section through a tilted VMS deposit with the unusual mineral assemblages due to the high-grade metamorphism (anthophyllite, grossular, tremolite, sillimanite, calcsilcates…), as well as porphyroblastic sulphides (sphalerite and pyrite). The field trip allowed students to observe the effect of metamorphism on hydrothermal alteration mineral assemblages and to document the geometry of a VMS deposit.

Visit of COREM installations in Quebec City (Friday January 17, 2014)
A group of 4 students went to visit the COREM installations, which is a research consortium for mineral treatment and metallurgy techniques. The visit was leaded by Jean-François Wilhelmy, Extractive
Mineralogy Researcher, to learn about different physical and chemical methods used in the industry. The group visited the pilot factory, which demonstrates several of these processes. The students were also introduced to the MLA (Mineral Liberation Analyser), a new device that can precisely and rapidly quantify minerals in concentrate samples.

Visit of Niobec Mine in Saint-Honoré (Wednesday March 19th, 2014)
The visit was leaded by Marc Lavoie, Geology Technician, and Jean-François Dorion, Exploration

This site is located approximately 6 km N from the axis of the Nittany Valley Anticline, and 7 km NW of Site 6. The formation is a heavily jointed and steeply tilted sandstone from the Juniata Formation. Close up observations and measurements were not able to be taken due to the road-cut being in a precarious location. Measurements were taken on a preliminary trip to the location and were used for…

The entire region of the Hudson Highlands underwent high-grade metamorphism, and at a series of locations different intrusions occurred during the Grenville Orogeny. Certain evidences to help back up this claim are the presence of gneissic rock and index minerals such as Siliminite and Garnet. Since the mineral composition indicates granulite facies, then its protolithic content is pelitic, meaning shale/mudrock. Also, a series of magmatic intrusions were shown the form of Lamprophyre, Granite, Pegmatite, and Diorite.…

In order to determine the time periods of the different strata and the processes to which they relate, I will give a description of the artifacts found and where they were found, as well as the describing the different layers of strata. Throughout this analysis, I will refer to the stratigraphic profiles of each excavation site. They are attached to the end of this report and labeled Figure 3.2, which I will refer to as “East”, and Figure 3.3, which I will refer to as “West”.…

Course Description This course gives an overview of physical geology by introducing concepts such as plate tectonics and geologic time. Students gain familiarity with the processes that shape the Earth’s surface and recognize the relevance of studying geology. Topics include the rock cycle, weathering, formation of geological features, and preservation of geological resources. The weekly labs add a practical component to the class. The labs build upon the concepts in the text and offer a chance to interact with the material and further their understanding. Policies Faculty and students/learners will be held responsible for understanding and adhering to all policies contained within the following two documents: University policies: You must be logged into the student website to view this document. Crystal Cave Geology

The Naica mine is located in Chihuahua, Mexico and was first discovered in 1794. The mines primary interest was silver and gold until about the 1900’s when a large-scale mining began as Zinc and Lead become more valuable resources. This is the largest mine in the country that produces lead, zinc and silver, among other minerals. The entrance is located 1385 m above sea level in the north of the 12km.-long sierra Naica. In April of 2000, brothers Elroy and Javier Delgado were drilling a new tunnel into the mine when they discovered a cavern full of natural treasure. The cavern is located one thousand feet down and it holds the world’s largest crystals on earth measuring from 36 feet and weighing up to 55 tons. The oldest crystal within the cavern started forming between 200,000 to 500,000 years ago. There are 140 crystals documented for and with a total estimate of 170 actual crystals within the cave. It is believed the crystals reached their colossal size due to the mineral-rich water in which they were submerged in. The constant temperature of 136 degrees Fahrenheit has allowed the massive gypsum crystals to take their shape.…

    The Ozark Mountains

The Saint Francois Mountain Range rises above the Ozark Mountains and is the geological cause of the highland dome. The volcanic and igneous rocks of the Saint Francois Mountains are the remains of a Precambrian Mountain range. The core of the mountain range once existed as an island in the Paleozoic seas. Reef complexes occur in sedimentary layers surrounding this ancient island. These “flanking reefs” were points of concentration for later ore bearing fluids which formed the rich lead-zinc ores that have been mined in the area. The Saint Francois Range is the core of the Ozarks, and was formed by volcanic activity as opposed to erosion. The igneous and volcanic rocks extend at depth under the relatively “thin veneer of Paleozoic sedimentary rocks” and form the basal crust of the entire region.…
