A Narrative Essay tells a story. This story is usually an experience or an event from the author’s past, a recent or ongoing event or experience, or something about a memorable person. Since in a narrative essay the author narrates personal experiences, it is generally written in first person and is told in a casual conversational style.
The essay is written from the author’s point of view and tries to lead the reader to reflect on it.
There are certain features to a narrative essay that should be kept in mind while writing it. These are:
1) The first paragraph should be an introduction, clearly telling the reader what kind of narrative it is – an event, an experience, or an observation.
2) Plenty of sensory details should be given, creating a unified and forceful effect.
3) While giving the details, anecdotes should be included using dialogues if necessary.
4) The event, experience, or observation should be recreated in such a way that the reader feels involved.
5) The verbs and modifiers used should be vivid and precise.
6) It should include all the conventions of a story – plot, setting, characters, climax, and an ending.
7) The essay should be well organized with the events described as they happened in time.
8) The final paragraph should be a reflection on the larger meaning or importance of the “story”.
Keep all these points in mind while making your point and you have a successful narrative essay. EXPOSITORY ESSAY
An Explanatory Essay, also called an Expository Essay, presents other people’s views, or reports an event or a situation. It conveys another person’s information in detail and explains what is difficult to understand. Without giving any criticism or argument, the writer of the essay elucidates the subject by analyzing it.
A good explanatory/expository essay consists of the following: 1) The introductory paragraph clearly states what is to be analyzed or explained.
2) Each subsequent paragraph has a distinct supporting topic.
3) Each of the sentences of the paragraph relates directly to the topic.
4) All the paragraphs are sequenced properly and make smooth transition from one topic to another.
5) Precise and accurate words are used to convey the message. 6) The concluding paragraph reinforces the position in a meaningful way.
If you are writing an explanatory/expository essay, keep these points in mind. Write clearly and effectively. Make sure your readers understand your analysis and know how you have arrived at your conclusions.
