Fast Food Nation Fast Food Nation, by Eric Schlosser, is a stark and unrelenting look into the fast food industry that has ingrained itself in not only American culture, but in culture around the world. There is almost no place on earth that the golden arches has not entered. Aside from Antarctica, there is a McDonalds on every continent, and the number of countries that have fast food restaurants is growing on a daily basis. Schlosser describes in detail what happens behind the scenes, before the hamburger and fries come wrapped in environmentally safe paper and are consumed by millions of people daily There are several stories that stick out in my mind. First is the one about a rancher in Colorado. He had resisted the idea of squeezing as many cows in an enclosed area as possible. Instead, he rotates where the cattle eat, what kinds of grasses they eat, and how often they eat it. His ranch was what cattle raising should be.
This is in contrast to how a majority of cattle are raised today. They stand in paddocks their whole life where they hardly have the ability to move, and they are fed things that cows aren 't designed to eat – corn, wheat, chicken parts, and even the leftovers of already slaughtered cattle. Then they are lead up a gangway, into a building where they are first shocked, then hung up by their hooves and have their necks slit, one after another. It harkens back to The Jungle by Upton Sinclair. After one hundred years, the conditions at the meat packing plants have not improved much. It is still the most dangerous job in America. Almost everyone who works there are injured at one point, be it from mechanical smashers or knives that had come too close to their arm. Hundreds of thousands of cattle are slaughtered every day, and that is to keep up with the demand from places like McDonald 's, Burger King, and Wendy 's.
It saddened me to read later that the Colorado rancher committed suicide because he could no longer compete with

    Reading this makes me surprised that we have supported and invested our money into fast-food restaurants that did not even take care of their employees and was not benefitting individuals with all the growth hormones that were put into their animals for such a long time. When the McNugget came out it was a huge success but it wasn’t enough for Fred Turner, he wanted more McNuggets and bigger ones, this then lead to getting a new breed of chickens, according to Eric Schlosser they were had “unusually large breasts” (140). But not only were the animals treated poorly, their own employees who worked hard were being treated as working animals. Right here in Greeley, Colorado, we have and still have a slaughter house where animals go to be cut into chunks of meat so we can cook and eat them. There are plenty of slaughter houses located all around the United States. Back around 1979, a worker named Kenny was working at the Monfort slaughterhouse in Grand Island, Nebraska. In the shipping department, where Kenny was positioned in, there were boxes that weighed over 100 pounds and one day a box fell from above where Kenny caught it with one arm.     The main characters in the novel Fast Food Nation are Richard and Maurice “Mac” McDonald, Ray Kroc, Walt Disney, Carl N. Karcher, and Dave Thomas. The McDonald’s brothers are from New Hampshire. They opened up the first McDonald’s restaurant in 1937 in southern California. They revolutionized the fast food industry in 1948 by ridding their business of carhops, and using disposable plates and cups to serve finger food. Ray Kroc was a high school drop-out from Illinois. He sold milkshake makers until he met the McDonald brothers in 1954. He sold milkshake makers to them, and bought the right to franchise their company. He is known as a pioneer in the fast-food industry for creating characters that rivaled others such as Mickey Mouse. Walt Disney became Ray Kroc’s biggest rival after refusing to put a McDonald’s in Disneyland, which was model marketing to children. Carl is also one of the American fast-food industry’s pioneers. At twenty-years-old, Carl moved to Anaheim, California where he began his first hotdog stand. Carl eventually turned his hotdog stands into drive-in restaurants. After observing the first McDonald’s restaurants success, Carl started expanding and developed the Carl’s Jr’s restaurants. In 1997, the corporation expanded dramatically with the new possession of the Hardee's Restaurant chain. In 2004, CKE Restaurants, Inc. had revenues in excess of 1.4 billion dollars. Dave Thomas dropped out of school at fifteen-years-old. After working as a bus boy and a cook, he eventually founded Wendy’s Old Fashioned Hamburgers restaurant in Columbus, Ohio in 1969. Today, there are thousands of Wendy’s restaurants and they remain popular throughout the world. Dave is probably best known as the "guy on the Wendy's TV commercials". From 1989 to 2002, Dave appeared in over 800 commercials for the restaurant chain. He died after a long battle with liver cancer in 2002.…
