But what is fashion? We could approach this question either in a simple or complex way. If we had to define it briefly, we would say that it is the latest style of clothing. As Rouse outlines: ‘Fashion is more than a commodity, the product of a particular industry, it is an attribute with which some styles are endowed. For a particular style of clothing to become a fashion it actually has to be worn by some people and recognized and acknowledged to be a fashion’ (1989:69). Apparently, the evolution of fashion is strongly connected to the development of society in the history. Several historical factors played decisive role in enabling society to change, such as the growth of the trade during the thirteenth century that resulted the merchant class to be in the ascendant by amassing their wealth. It seemed that there was some kind of possibility for the middle class to rise, and having social ambitions, they not only wanted to compete with the upper class, but to exceed them. They could not have manifested their aim in a most obvious way than in dress. Therefore the concept of fashion itself grew out from the human mind as a tool of…

Fashion mainly refers to anything which is popular in a culture at any given time, it is inclusive of areas such as; style of dress, cuisine, literature, art, architecture, fashion trends and many other popular factors. Coco Chanel said, “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” Fashion is readily accessible so it is easy for an individual to use it to express themself to others as it helps to show who they are and depict their personality in the terms of visual information. Andy Bennett (2005) confirms that, “fashion provides one of the most ready means through which individuals can make expressive individual statements about their identities” (p.96). He also points out (p. 95) that “of the many commodities and leisure resources through which individuals in contemporary society construct and play out identities in their everyday lives fashion plays a central role”. It is particularly necessary for individuals to express their individuality and position themselves in relation to others in modern society because of the fast pace of life and anonomity of it, as theorist J Entwistle observes “fashion is particularly relevant in the context of ‘the modern city (where) we mingle with crowds of strangers”.(Bennett, p 96) Bennett argues that the relative anomonity of modern day life “calls for highly visual and relatively instantaneous means of asserting one’s identity”.(p.96) Fashion enables a person to do this and consequently can be an influential resource, so the statement that “fashion is a key resource through which individuals in late modernity construct their identities and position themselves in relation to others” seems to…

Historically, fashion has always fascinated men in all human culture. Fashion, fads and trends are intertwined with human culture and civilization. The desire to look good and exceptional and to be acknowledged by others drives individuals to invent new fashions. Fashion can simply be defined as ‘’the cultural construction of the embodied identity’’ (Fashion Theory, 1). In everyday usage and for the purpose of this write-up, fashion is seen as the prevailing mode or style of dressing prevalent at any particular period in any given society. There is an old saying, “You are what you eat” and in fashion this consists also as, “You are what you wear.” Clothing is often an expression of spirit and character, so there is nothing wrong with finding a look that suits you. Everyone is an individual and your clothes can help you to express your innermost thoughts, your kindliness and your good feelings toward yourself. Fashion can mean many different things to different people but above all fashion is a leeway to ones character. According to Tiwa Savage (2011) in the article, “Fashion is an extension to ones character,” she states, “To me whatever you put on reflects your mood, and if I am feeling glamorous I wear something that is glamorous, when I am feeling more relaxed I put on things that make me feel relaxed; so basically fashion is an expression of your person (p.1).” Your personal mark is the one that really counts and can make a difference by connecting two strongly related worlds that apparently seem totally incompatibles: our inner world and our exterior image. Every texture, color and other artificial shape becomes a way of emphasizing different personality aspects.…
