Family Genogram Case Study

In this illustration we look at the family genogram of Juan and Elena Hernandez. Family has a different meaning to various people. For some family maybe mom, dad, and their siblings and to others it may be friends that are considered family. According to Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman “The family is the primary institution for the rearing and socializing of children” (pp, 552). This definition explicates that it is in the family where kids learn most of their socialization skills. Provided this information one can postulate the discipline strategy for children of Juan and Elena Hernandez was learned from how both Juan and Elena were raised. Given that both Juan and Elena were raised in the manner where the discipline tactic was let's say for lack of a better term “military style” it would be very common that they use the same tactics with their children. As a result of his upbringing Juan is apprehensive in meeting with social worker and does not comprehend how his discipline strategy can cause an issue where he and his wife not only have to see a social worker but also attend parenting classes. At the start of meeting with the social worker Elena was more open than Juan. This may pose a a divide in the treatment process as Elena may be open to disclosing information and on the other hand Juan may feel they are revealing to much information. A social worker can only be as effect as the information s/he knows about a situation.
According to Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman “A genogram is a graphic way of investigationg the origins of a client's problem by diagramming the family over at least three generations” (pp, 595). A genogram will help the social worker in the treatment
