The Burning City
"People are sheep, TV is the shepherd." (Jess C. Scott) The novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury has a society of many uneducated and foolish people who do not know what is going on around them. They do not see that they are slaves to technology. The government in Fahrenheit 451 is making sure that they are not many intelligent people around. They are also making sure that there are not any people that know the truth about their society. Their government's main mission is to brainwash all the citizens so they think they are free, but …show more content…
the reality is they are slaves to technology. Bradbury illustrates the theme mindlessness of mass culture by using a personification, a simile and a metaphor. Mindlessness of mass culture is shown when Bradbury uses a simile ..."His fingers were like ferrets that had done some evil and now never rested..." (Bradbury 105) In the novel, many people in their society are being brainwashed by the media and technology.
The government is trying to control and brainwash them and it is working for them. The society of Fahrenheit 451 has forbiden the possession of books. This quote is very significant because Beatty knows that Montag has possession of a book, Montag is nervous to turn the book in because he is afraid of the consequences. This shows that books are illegal and not common in their society. Most people in Montag's society are anti-literate and feel nervous and uncomfortable around books. Many of the people in their society are stupid and don't know the truth about the world, nor do they know the truth about their society. The mindlessness of mass culture theme is shown when Bradbury explains how they will hit reality one day, and that hit will be a huge …show more content…
shock. The theme is shown when Bradbury uses a metaphor to show that they are living in a bubble and one day they will hit reality and that bubble will explode and it will be one huge shock. A quote from the novel is "They are so confident that they will run on forever. But they won't run on. They don't know that this is all one huge blazing meteor that makes a pretty fire in space, but someday it'll have to hit." (Bradbury 103) Bradbury is illustrating that they are all living in one bubble. They are escaping reality by entering the TV parlor room. People that are similar to Mildred just want to have fun and be happy all the time, even though she had attempted suicide three times. Bradbury is trying to explain that this happiness will last only for a little while until reality hits and that happiness turns into depression. Bradbury uses a literary device to tell the readers that one day the bubbles that some people live in will pop and they will find out about the truth. Bradbury uses a personification to describe the way that Mildred feels and looks.
Montag pulls out a book about poetry and Mildred, Mrs. Bowles and Mrs.Phelps are in awe because books are forbidden in their society. Later, Montag read's them them a quote from "Dover Beach". Mrs. Phelps starts to cry out of random and Mrs. Bowles starts shouting at Montag about why it's books and tears, books and sadness. This quote shows that Mildred was embarrased around Montag because he was doing something illegal and shameful in the eyes of their society. This quote also shows us how anti-literate their society is because books are illegal and they are not required to think. Mrs. Bowles thinks books have a negative effect on people. She also believes that books are sadness; does that sound
right? Does not allowing possession of books sound right? Does not knowing the truth about your own society sound right? What about being embarrased or scared to read? Do any of those sound right? Bradbury is illustrating that someday will be rare to find because nobody reads them nor do they possess them. He also wants the readers to know that they are in a bubble and one day that bubble will burst. Lastely, Bradbury proves to us that the people are anti-literate because they are saying books are negative, and also because they are slaves to society. But the people of Fahrenheit 451 don'r know that books are the key to set you free.
