Teenage is the most vital and delicate stage of human life. During teenage years, youngsters try to follow new fashion, culture and style which is being presented in different programs and advertisements on television.
But TV which was once a source of entertainment and education, has now become and addiction. The educational content is sorely missing form TV programs today. Programs like Animal Planet and National Geographic have literally disappeared! Outdoor activities and children’s studies have all taken a backseat to TV shows. We have no time for ourselves as well as others. We plan our work schedules and outings keeping in view our favorite TV shows.
The reading habit has virtually disappeared from the lives of school going children. Flickering images have become our window to the world of entertainment today. We are paying a heavy price for this idiot box. Most of the time the serials are meaningless and exaggerated, and in the name of comedy improper scenes are shown. Drug peddlers, drinking, violence, terrorists etc. are the main topics for most programs.
Many of you might say that there are good effects of TV serials too; however there are more of bad effects than good effects.
In my opinion we are losing our culture and identity, one drama at a time. Television has changed human life, both positively and negatively. In the end the decision rests upon us. If we consider this decision well, it will change our life, because you are the books you read, the people you meet, the conversations you engage in and the TV programs you watch. Thank You.

Television as we know it today has drastically changed from the days of yesteryear. Even in my 23 years of living, I can still remember a time when you could actually learn something from watching television. I remember sitcoms like the Cosby Show, A Different World, and Family Matters. These were shows that left you with a sense of pride not only in yourself, but your family, and your community. However, somewhere along the line a paradigm shift happened, if you will and changed the course of television as we know it. The networks that broadcast our favorite shows that we trusted to educate us have now turned around and decided that it is more important to make billions of dollars a year entertaining its audiences instead of…

It is true that “television entertains no issue that cannot be personified”(Seducing America.) Unfortunately, television must focus on what can be personified in order to retain the attention of its audience. Americans are restless and need constant shift in the media in order to keep them engaged. It wasn’t always like what it is today, before television everything was slower. It took longer for people to communicate and as a result took longer for things to change. In the current media climate, nothing is slow and the news is always changing because the internet allows Americans to keep in contact with the rest of the world. The beauty of it, is that as a human race we are more connected than ever. However, with all good things comes some evil.…

The main conclusion in this article is that TV really doesn’t make your life any better and to limit TV time with children and adolescents, or better yet, turn the TV off and go outside! Today, many citizens of the world utilize television for the purpose of educating themselves, for the purpose of obtaining knowledge about current events and for the purpose of recreation. When I was 12 years old, my late grandfather said to me, “ Don’t ever watch TV! There are no educational channels or programs on TV that will help you become a better student.” I wanted to prove him wrong. In order to do so, I showed him the Discovery channel, which is known for broadcasting useful programs in the area…

They are tired of dismissing it as a mere distraction or else resenting it as the “evil twin” of universal education. Most of us, after all, like watching what we consider to be worthwhile, informative, or entertaining. Most educators are aware that the bumper-sticker invocation to “kill your television” has an ostrich-like impracticality. In the current political climate, the political options generally presented to deal with television have been, at best, fairly limited reactions to television’s perceived excesses. If we are to have a television system whose goals have more to do with public service than commerce - whether that means a greater diversity of images and representations, less commercial interruption, more documentary programming, or more educational children’s programs - we need to develop a citizenry that appreciates the politics of regulation and funding, to thereby imagine what television might be, and how the system might be changed to make it so. The challenge for media literacy, we would argue, is to make this possibility seem less…

Film and television have played a big role in Americans lives since their creation. Americans have seen how it has improved but most importantly what has changed as well. It has been said that television, has little or no educational value. I strongly disagree with this statement for a number of reasons. These reasons include that there are television shows that talk about and teach many children about subjects they learn in school such as the science and history. Also, TV catches children’s attention in such a way that a teacher couldn’t, because the way producers of educational television programs portray the shows make learning fun and interesting. This is why I would argue that television has significant educational value.…

Anytime you watch TV you are learning something, whether it’s a new medical term on the show House or a new species of bugs in the Discovery Channel or even the names of the celebrity dance pairs in DWTS. Of course your not going to learn how to find the square root of a number or learn about the hundreds of different psychology theories, that’s not what television is for. Television is supposed to be enjoyable and a distraction from our hectic life. When I was younger I used to watch a show called Ed, Edd & Eddy and my mom would always ask me why I watched the dumb show and what was I supposed to learn from it. Even at a young age I knew…

Technological advances in the electronic industry have made watching television a prominent source of entertainment. With present day technology being far more advanced than it used to be, advances like HD televisions and DVR’s have turned watching television into a luxury. Television has become an affordable and easily accessible luxury that many parents and their children turn to for entertainment, which unfortunately can have major consequences. In children, watching television can cause poor grades, behavior problems, obesity and risky behavior. Instead of doing homework, studying, exercising and having hobbies children are wasting time in front of the television. While some may argue that watching television can be an effective learning source, it is not. Throughout this paper children are defined as ages 1-18.…

Television viewing is a major activity and influence on children and adolescents. Children in the United States watch an average of three to four hours of television a day. By the time of high school graduation, they will have spent more time watching television than they have in the classroom. While television can entertain, inform, and keep our children company, it may also influence them in undesirable ways." (AACAP, 2001, p. 1)…
