Title:
Respiration-Fermentation in Yeast

Aim:
To study the different of solution affect the gas forms during fermentation in yeast.

Procedure:
Refer to Lab manual

Result:

Questions:
1. Yes.
2. Sucrose.
3. When no oxygen the ATP will be produce.
4. Brewery.
5. Aerobic glucose and aerobic glucose oxygen.
6. CO2 and aerobic water.
7. CO2 and aerobic ethanol.

Conclusion:
The purpose of this experiment is to determine sucrose gas form during fermentation with yeast is the most CO2. Sucrose did better than glucose because glucose is the simplest sugar and was there more as a control. Sucrose will produce the most CO2 because it is a complex sugar than the most sugar. Thus, sucrose is a good substrate for fermentation.

Discussion:
The data cannot be 100% reliable since it is difficult to measure the exact amount of CO2. Because the gas forms during fermentation will at the middle of the pipette.
Possible Errors:
The wrong amount of solution affected the gas level (mL) the pipette not fill enough of yeast solution affected the gas level (mL)

    To be able to carry on metabolic processes in the cell, cells need energy. The cells can obtain their energy in different ways but the most efficient way of harvesting stored food in the cell is through cellular respiration. Cellular respiration is a catabolic pathway, which breaks down large molecules to smaller molecules, produces an energy rich molecule known as ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) and a waste product that is released as CO2. Basically, cellular respiration is a metabolic process that releases energy from organic compounds (such as C6H12O6) by metabolic chemical oxidation in the mitochondria within each cell. Proteins, carbohydrates, and fats can all be broken down into fuel for the cell but cellular respiration is usually correlated with glucose.     Not many of the carbon dioxide bubbles have popped, even then the balloon’s circumference increased noticeably. When carbon dioxide bubbles pop they release the carbon dioxide gas, which inflates the balloon. If there is more bubbles popped then there is more inflation of the balloon. If there is less bubbles popped then the balloon will not inflate as much. According to the evidence, the more the sucrose concentration, the more carbon dioxide production. The more sucrose there is, there is more glucose. The more the glucose there is the more the carbon dioxide production. In anaerobic fermentation the glucose is converted into carbon dioxide and ATP. ATP is energy, it is left over because glucose has so much energy that not all of it has been turned into carbon dioxide.     An observation was made on whether or not the sugars, fructose and ribose would be fermented in yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). By looking at the chemical structures of these sugars given in (Figure 1), we looked for anything that might determine the metabolization of these sugars. An equal 6mL (milliliter) sample of 2.5% fructose and yeast suspension was pipetted into a fermentation tube. The same procedure above was performed with the sugar ribose which has a concentration of 2.5% as well. Once this was done, the tubes were turned upside down to remove any air bubbles formed. Both tubes were then incubated in a 37◦ C (Celsius) water bath for ten minutes. After ten minutes, both tubes were taken from the water bath and observed for any presence of gas accumulation. This accumulation could be observed in the vertical stem of the tube and would look like frothy bubbles, also known as CO2 (Carbon dioxide). The results were documented and a hypothesis was made based on these results that may provide an explanation for the observations made on the structures of fructose and ribose. Next we tested two different sugars that we picked from a list of six sugars given in our lab manual, (arbabinose, galactose, mannose, sorbose, glucose, and xylose). The chemical structures for these sugars were also given (see Figure 2). Based on the structure of the sugar we chose one that we thought would metabolize in yeast and one we expected not to. We tested these sugars the same way that fructose and ribose were tested in the previous procedures. The predictions and results for the two sugars were documented in our notebook. We then looked back at our first hypothesis. If our first hypothesis did not support our results, we revised it and proposed a new hypothesis. The new hypothesis considered another feature of the sugar structure that might be important to the metabolization. We continued to test the rest of the sugars, two at a time in order to see…
