Guilt is culpable of or responsible for a specified wrongdoing, In the play John Proctor is guilty for committing adultery. In the play proctor has an affair with Abigail. In the play it Abigail states“ And you must. You are no wintry man. I know you, John. I know you. I cannot sleep for dreamin. (Miller, Act 1. 470 ). He believes that his affair had damaged his relationship to God. His guilt has made it very hard for himself to forgive himself for what he has done. Even after everything his relationship with Elizabeth stayed the same. We can learn that some characters may actually have a good heart but they made a mistake.

Proctor claims his integrity by making the Ultimate choice than to have his name be attached to a lie. During the speech to the court he gains integrity and courage to tell the court about the affair. He told the court because he had lost faith in himself and feels he shouldn't have the dignity to defend his name. It is very Important for a person to have integrity because that is what makes you. No one would want to have a bad reputation on there name. In the play proctor says” Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! because I lie and sign myself to lies! because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang! How many I live without my name? I have given you my soul;leave me my name.” (Miller. Act 4. 538-539). That’s why at the end Proctor rather die with integrity and honor than die with a bad name.
In conclusion there are many themes throughout the play. Revenge, Guilt, and Integrity. Guilt makes people feel a certain way, Revenge makes people act a certain way and Integrity makes people
