Ethical Choices at Choice House Case
1. Identify any internal control weaknesses for the five areas mentioned by the Finance Committee. Discuss any weakness and explain how to improve each situation.

* Inadequate system to track the revenue generation and grant * There is no system to track the revenue generation

* Inadequate system to monitor the expenses * All the expenses should go through an approval process which requires all the expenses should be properly documented and the need explained. This is not in place in Choice House 2. Identify ethical issues that Ashley should discuss with the Finance Committee? Which IMA Ethical Standards would apply to Ashley? Discuss. * Credibility: The ED should record all expenses and provide all information when I asked. He cannot deny any information. Providing accurate and insightful information are the key function to ED role. 3. How should Ashley respond to the Finance Committee? Review the IMA Resolution of Ethical Conflict section of the IMA Statement of Ethical Professional Practice for guidance. Prepare a memo to Joan sharing Ashley’s findings. Should Ashley send a copy of the memo to the ED? Explain.

* Ashley should discuss the case with her immediate supervisor and also take the issue to upper level to the executive director.

    This case presents a very typical situation that people encounter while working in the corporate environment. What is ethical, what is morally correct and what is just right out against the law are the questions that we all face while working in a corporate environment. Some of the ethical questions are governed by the law facing the situation. For example while working in an investment bank you most probably have access to inside information about upcoming deals that one could possibly use for personal monetary gain or you could act as a tippie and possibly share that confidential information with others. This kind of a situation is definilety governed by the law and you can actually be charged with various insider trading laws and possibly do some jail time as well. The other situation that is presented in the case is purely about ones ethical and moral standards. The analyst either has to compromise her loyalty towards her company B&B or towards her best friend Lori. While the situation presented is not a real zero-sum game, i.e., one player’s loss does not equal to the gain of the other player. When faced in a situation like this one has to think about what decisions can be made that will have the least affect on the players involved. The analyst should not look at the situation she faces as black or white. She should rather think about other options she might have to retain her friend’s loyalty while not compromising her loyalty towards her current employer. For example, Lori has already been laid off by her current employer, Universal group. The Universal group has already broken certain ethical and moral laws by not informing about the situation to B&B. So can the analyst come up with a situation where she can get Lori immediately and legally hired at B&B and convince her to share the information with B&B.     In this mini case Mike Stephan is dealing with a very difficult situation because he is new to the accounting firm and wants to impress the superior accountants on his engagement team. While auditing for EarthWear, he makes a little mistake by spending too many hours looking at the wrong bank statements when he is not supposed to go over a total of 6 hours. Pressured by the senior on the audit, he is caught between lying about his hours or telling the truth and going over budget on the audit, potentially causing the other accountants on the team to look bad professionally. The first alternative that I have learned about when addressing ethical issues as a staff auditor would be to talk to the senior on the team and tell him/her exactly what is going on, but the senior is the one telling him to “eat” his hours. Since the manager is also putting pressure on the senior to pretend the extra hours never occurred, Mike needs to go directly to the partner on the team and tell him the issue.
