In this assignment I am going to evaluate the influence of two major theories of ageing on health and social care provision. Disengagement basically means when old people disconnect themselves from the outside world. Activity theory is when old people stay connected to their old ways of living. During the ageing process, the elderly may take different approaches to aging and may apply to different theories of aging such as disengagement theory and the activity theory. All elderly individuals will deal with aging in different ways. They may wish to stay active or they may wish to disengage themselves due to depression or they may be unable to deal with the processes of becoming older. There are many services available for older people. These services are provided in order to help them remain active. For example, community transport, home care, adult protection, residential car and travel pass. All these services are beneficial towards elderly people. Social workers provide support and assistance in many ways. Tasks can include befriending, visiting, shopping or any other task which can help an individual enhance their daily living. These services will increase the individual confidence and self-esteem. This will help the elderly individual be more comfortable with that particular individual or worker. Another service that is available for older people in the ‘adult protection’ which is an organisation across UK that work together to increase their understanding of the abuse of vulnerable adults such as the elderly.
