Definition
Esters are chemical compounds consisting of a carbonyl adjacent to an ether linkage. They are derived by reacting an oxo acid with a hydroxyl compound such as an alcohol or phenol. Esters are usually derived from an inorganic acid or organic acid in which at least one -OH (hydroxyl) group is replaced by an -O-alkyl (alkoxy) group, and most commonly from carboxylic acids and alcohols. That is, esters are formed by condensing an acid with an alcohol.
Esters are ubiquitous. Most naturally occurring fats and oils are the fatty acid esters of glycerol. Esters with low molecular weight are commonly used as fragrances and found in essential oils and pheromones. Phosphoesters form the backbone of DNA molecules. Nitrate esters, such as nitro-glycerine, are known for their explosive properties, while polyesters are important plastics, with monomers linked by ester moieties.

Structure & Bonding
Esters contain a carbonyl centre, which gives rise to 120°C-C-O and O-C-O angles. Unlike amides, esters are structurally flexible functional groups because rotation about the C-O-C bonds has a low barrier. Their flexibility and low polarity is manifested in their physical properties; they tend to be less rigid (lower melting point) and more volatile (lower boiling point) than the corresponding amides. The pKa of the alpha-hydrogen on esters is around 25.
Physical properties and characterization
Esters are more polar than ethers but less polar than alcohols. They participate in hydrogen bonds as hydrogen-bond acceptors, but cannot act as hydrogen-bond donors, unlike their parent alcohols. This ability to participate in hydrogen bonding confers some water-solubility. Because of their lack of hydrogen-bond-donating ability, esters do not self-associate. Consequently esters are more volatile than carboxylic acids of similar molecular weight.
Esters are usually identified by gas chromatography, taking advantage of their volatility. IR spectra for esters feature an intense sharp band in the range 1730–1750 cm−1 assigned to νC=O. This peak changes depending on the functional groups attached to the carbonyl. For example, a benzene ring or double bond in conjugation with the carbonyl will bring the wave number down about 30 cm−1.

Applications and occurrence

Esters are widespread in nature and are widely used in industry. In nature, fats are, in general, trimesters derived from glycerol and fatty acids. Esters are responsible for the aroma of many fruits, including apples, durians, pears, bananas, pineapples, and strawberries. Several billion kilograms of polyesters are produced industrially annually, important products being polyethylene terephthalate, acrylate esters, and cellulose acetate.

    Analysis of the C13-NMR for liquid C showed 5 distinctive peaks in the range of 0-80 ppm and one peak around 170 ppm indicating a carbon skeleton consisting of six carbons. After analysis of the IR spectrum, further confirmation of the functional groups found in the H-NMR and C-NMR were seen in the IR. Such peaks include multiple variable peaks ranging from 1200-1300cm-1 that show a Csp2-O oxygen bond that can be inferred for the ether functional group. Additional characteristic peaks include peaks ranging from 1680-1750cm-1 that represents a ketone functional group is present, and a broad sharp peak ranging from 3200-3559cm-1 which is indicative of concentrated alcohols and phenols. This is, however, not supported by the NMR spectra, and hence suggests the presence of impurities, especially in regards to the concentrated alcohol and phenol peak. The boiling point of butyl acetate is 126C according to literature. However, the boiling point observed during distillation was 117C, a lower measurement likely due to the presence of impurities as suggested by the IR…

Introduction The general formula of an alcohol is ROH in which the R is an aliphatic hydrocarbon group. Alcohols may be looked upon as derivatives of water, HOH. One hydrogen of water is substituted by an alkyl group, R. Like water, alcohols show hydrogen bonding. As the chain of the R group increases the hydrocarbon character of the compound overshadows the polar character of the OH group. Consequently, the solubility and boiling point of an alcohol are affected by the length of the carbon chain and the shape of the molecule. The short chain alcohols are soluble in water, whereas the longer chain alcohols are insoluble in water. In general a molecule which is more compact (i.e., more branched) will be more soluble in water and will have a lower boiling point than the straight chain isomer. Phenols are aromatic alcohols, in which R is an aromatic ring. This experiment will demonstrate some of the properties of alcohols and phenols. Although alkyl alcohols have an -OH group, they do not ionize in water, whereas phenols ionize like acids (donating a proton to water). The -OH group of alkyl alcohols can be positioned on different carbon atoms of the carbon chain and are classified as primary (1°), secondary (2°), or tertiary (3°) alcohols depending on whether the -OH group is attached to a carbon with 1, 2 or 3 other carbon atoms attached to it. These different alcohols react differently with Lucas reagent and with Bordwell-Wellman reagent; hence these reagents can be used for identifying the class of alcohol.
