“That was a long time ago. But it’s wrong what they say about the past, I have learned about how you can bury it, because the past claws its way out. Looking back now, I realize I have been peeking into that deserted ally for the last twenty-six years.” (p.1) Khaled Hussein’s story of the The Kite runner showed a intensity of love, trust, and betrayal towards two completely different people. Amir the son of a wealthy man in the northern area of Kabul who develops a friendship with one of his servant named Hassan. As years journey, Amir had a chance to save Hassan but the way he acted affected their lives which led them to follow two separate paths in life. As young boys becoming emotionally, Amir and Hassan enjoyed doing everything together. Amir never considered Hassan as his friend. Amir felt this way because he knew that neither how their history is could change who they’re. Amir was a Pashtun and Hassan is a hazara, but they were kids, they fed from the same breast and they learned to craw together. Both of them knew that nothing was going to change. They used to play “hide and seeks, cops and robbers, cowboys and Indians, and they loved insect torture” (pg; 25). One of the most memorable times that Hassan and Amir Share together was under the pomegranate tree on top of the hill is where Amir read many stories to Hassan. 2. Hassan is a harelipped (cleft lip) kite runner, his best friend or play mate is Amir who is rich, the opposite of Hassan. Hassan has a round face like a Chinese doll, flat broad nose, slanting green narrow eyes, tiny ears, and pointed stub chin. A cleft lip is a birth defect that usually appears as a missing part of the upper lip that can extend towards the nose. Harelip is another term for cleft lip, but is considered an offensive way to say it. He was also poor and he was not close to a lot of people. Hassan’s relationship based on his friendship with Amir, is that he was loyal to him and never told on his friends, he was easily persuaded to do things even when he knew he would upset his father. Hassan’s first word was Amir and I believe this was important because he was special to him. Just like a baby learning their first words such as “mama” or “dada”, Amir was Hassan’s first word, which as a result shows a significant meaning between how close they are towards each other. Hassan and Amir were both nursed by the same woman, and it is known that people who were fed from the same breasts have a kinship and even share a brotherhood. The contrast between Hassan and Amir would be that, Hassan is poor, Hazara Shi’a Muslim, lives in a mud shack, he runs for the kite, humble, athletic, loyal, intelligent, and always read Amir’s mind. Amir was wealthy,…

In Khaled Hosseini's best-selling novel The Kite Runner, two boys, Hassan and Amir, have a friendship that is not as typical as most children's. Although they do carve into a tree that they are the "sultans of Kabul", their friendship is weak and one sided. These boys grew up in Kabul, and although their childhood friendship may have seemed like something out of a book, complete with pomegranate trees and story telling, it was dark and emotionally wearing. A main reason for this was because of the one subtle difference between these boys, omitting the differences in character. Hassan is a Hazara and Amir is a Pashtun. For this reason the Afghan society has classified Hassan as a lower human being and he, along with his father, is in servitude towards Amir and his family. Amir's lack of self-confidence throughout the novel hinders his ability to have a true friendship with Hassan. Eventually Amir tries to break away from the power of the jealousy and guilt that Hassan has brought into his life.An underlying cause of the problems Amir has with his friendship pertaining to Hassan is that he is jealous of Hassan. This jealousy causes him to test Hassan, and to take advantage of Hassan's unwavering loyalty. This is just to prove that Hassan is lower than he is. Amir confirms this by humiliating Hassan to himself, by taking advantage of Hassan's illiteracy to amuse himself, such as when he convinces Hassan that imbecile meant smart and intelligent. Amir is not accomplishing anything by teasing Hassan except that he is establishing that he is smarter. Amir feels that he has to prove himself because he lacks acceptance from his father, so he teases Hassan in order to become acceptable to his father. Amir once again has to prove to himself that he has the ultimate superiority by testing Hassan when he tells him to eat dirt. Hassan says that he would, which is all Amir needs to expand his ego and confirm that he is still above…

Amir’s fight for Baba’s attention left him with a need to ‘fake interest for as long as possible’ even if it meant pretending he was interested in the kind of sports his father was but even these attempts were deemed feeble by his father and surely pushed them apart even more than before. His attempts at closing the gap between them, pushing aside their differences in fact influenced the events that happened afterwards, such as his need for the kite, over saving his best friend, Hassan, in the alley.…
