A beneficial factor of starting school later in the day is it will allow teens to focus more in school. The brain needs a certain amount of hours of sleep in order to function properly. Teens need about 8 to 10 hours of sleep each to function. Most teens do not get enough sleep. Studies have found that only 15% reported sleeping 8 1/2 hours on school nights. The average school day is around 6-7 hours, and within this time students are learning new things. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information our attention span is about 8 seconds, and with most teens not getting enough sleep this number could decrease for them. …show more content…
Focusing in school is the key to success, and the time school is now starting is preventing teens from acquiring that goal.
Starting school later in the day could possibly increase teen’s grades in school. As a student I know the days I get more sleep I am more productive in school. With the right amount of sleep comes more focus, and with more focus comes better grades. Studies show that teenagers who get less sleep are more likely to get poor grades in school, fall asleep in school, and be tardy to school. If school starts later in the day it will allow teens to have more energy to complete work that is assigned to them. This will be the affect if school starts later in the day.
If school were to start later in the day it would promote positive attitudes towards students.
Teens suffer from many sleep illnesses like narcolepsy, insomnia, restless legs syndrome or sleep apnea, but a common struggle teens go through is depression. With the early times that school is starting it forces teens to lose their REM or rapid eye movement. If teens lose this sleep they won’t have control over their mood. Sleep deprivation causes teenagers to be moody, irritable, and cranky. This will make them have a difficult time changing their mood, and getting frustrated or upset. There are other problems when it comes to the loss of sleep. Getting little sleep is linked with obesity, depression, drug use and other
problems.
I believe starting school later in the day will improve many factors in teens lives overall. Starting school later will improve the grades of the teens, and it will also improve their learning process. It will change their attitudes towards school, and how they feel about going. Some teens are affected by school already so this change could help with everyday problems in their lives. School starting earlier in the day affects the attendance of teens while starting later will not give them an excuse to not come. As a student in high school I believe this will change the effect school has on teens.
