Antisocial Personality Disorder
“Antisocial” is a constantly used slang for different, abnormal, or socially awkward individuals. But do we really know what’s behind this word’s meaning? In the U.S, approximately 1% of the population have an antisocial disorder, of which three percent of them are males and only one percent are female. Why is that number so low? These individuals are incredibly difficult to identify and tend to blend into society very easily. Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD) is found in many types of people including sociopaths. Being antisocial can make people anxious because of their stiff personality, manipulative to make sure they are at the “top” of their social group, and dangerous with power that can destroy lives. Scientists have studied the anatomy of a sociopath and they have found that they can lack or have underdeveloped sections in their brains. In the human brain there are certain sections that control how to react to what we see and hear. This section is in the front of the brain called the frontal lobe. In the frontal lobe a healthy person can react to people during a conversation, but with a sociopath that part of the brain can be inconclusive so they can’t react to signs of love, friendship, sadness, happiness, and overall emotions. These emotions are also found in the amygdala. The amygdala is found in the center of the brain towards the eyes. When a part of the brain is closer to the eyes it is usually used to process and act on what is seen. If a sociopath is lacking both the frontal lobe and the amygdala it can seem like the person does not have a “filter”. Meaning that they don’t process what they are saying, they simply say anything that comes to mind and don’t really care what effect it can have on people. Even if they do know what they are saying, it won’t matter because they are their own boss and will say whatever they feel is
