Choose a celebrity with a certain notoriety surrounding him or her. Here you will need to consult not only academic articles but also popular sources, such as opinion pieces or album/movie reviews. Explain why the celebrity is controversial or popular. What do the differing opinions tell you about the star? For instance, some people say Miley Cyrus is an attention-seeking brat while others applaud her for being in charge of her style, sexuality, and image at a young age. Some suggestions of notorious individuals follow, though you may certainly explore your own: Eminem, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Madonna, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Michael Jackson, and Whitney Houston. While the majority of these are musical, you are welcome to choose a television, sports, or movie star or even a fictional character as long as you have enough material to help propel your …show more content…
No matter what your opinion on a particular issue or person, I should not get a sense of your bias. Present your evidence in a professional manner.
--Your essay should be well-organized, employing effective topic sentences and transitional phrases as you compare and contrast the various literatures you will be analyzing.
--You must cite any paraphrases, summaries, or direct quotes within your paper. Do not rely wholly on merely summarizing, as I want to see your own analysis of them throughout. You are going one step beyond summarizing by connecting your texts and analyzing the rhetorical strategies your texts employ.
--You do not have to have an argumentative thesis for this essay, but your paper should have a clear focus and identity that presents a solid, cohesive view of the issue at hand.
--Your essay should be free of mechanical or grammatical errors, having been edited and proofread meticulously. I have not previously counted off too much for grammar, but your last essay for the course should reflect a growth in your writing and editing skills, so I will be deducting points for

Your purpose in this four- to seven-page essay is to closely analyze one position in your controversy. You’ll do this through the careful analysis of a single text advocating a position. For our purposes here, a “text” can be loosely defined as any persuasive effort that can be interpreted. A text may be a print article (such as an opinion column in a newspaper), a blog entry, a video, a commercial, an image, or a webpage. You should select a text that makes a clear argument—a text that very clearly asks the audience to believe, feel, or do something.…

    Campaign of 1828

The campaign of 1828 was a running campaign between the world traveler, John Quincy Adams, and the national hero, Andrew Jackson. Though by the end of the campaign, Andrew Jackson won, I believe that Adams should have won instead, for a majority of reasons. For starters, John Quincy Adams was the more educated choice because of his fathers background but also for his own broad knowledge of politics. I think that this should have gave him more leverage because to be president, I believe, that you should have a background in politics that way you have broader ideas and a broader mindset, which Jackson did not have. Adam also traveled around the world, he was an ambassador to several countries in Europe. This meant that Adams was well connected with European rulers and knew how European politics worked. In his first term, Adams could have done things better, yes, but I think that he was driven towards better education for America, which I respect and would have earned my vote for the election in 1828. When Jackson got into office and his wife tragically passed, which no one could have foresaw, I think, Jackson, made some decisions out of…

I would watch so many documentaries as a child that just the idea of a alien, possibly abducting me scared the wits off me. As I watched more it started to interest me, there could possibly be another species out there. Who knows what they’re doing, what they’re plotting, if they’re smarter than us, older than us. While I was typing this I thought of visiting Area 51; a highly classified remote detachment of Edwards Air Force Base. Why wouldn't my ticket be for them? They have studies and evidence of possible extraterrestrial life and objects, but it's not where I could find them. Another example of a documentary/movie is “The Fourth Kind” is a movie with ‘actual footage’ of disappearances involving extraterrestrials in Nome, Alaska. It shows…

For this paper you will be writing a critique of one of the argument articles you worked with for your summary (in Writing and Reading Across the Curriculum), or you may choose an argumentative article of your own, but if you choose an article that is not from one of our books, please provide a copy of your article with your finished critique. The article you choose will need to be complex enough for you to be able to discuss it for several pages because the critique of the article should be 750-1250 words and should have a title that is not just the title of the text you are evaluating or simply the word "critique." The paper should be stapled or paper clipped together or in a folder, or I will deduct five points from the final grade because it is the writer’s job to put the paper together. Please include a photocopy or print out of the article with your finished critique if you are choosing your own article, so I can check the original article if anything in the critique is not clear to me. Finally, please include your rough draft along with the completed paper. All of these items must be turned in at the same time on the day the paper is due.…

The idea of following societal norms and fitting in is a very universal concept that many people continuously feel the need to conform to. As Rick Warren, author of “What on Earth Am I Here For,” said, “Those who follow the crowd usually get lost in it.” Unfortunately, society tends to criticize those who do not stick to the norms, but positive outcomes can be achieved when one chooses to defy them. Although many examples of individuals breaking free of what society considers normal can easily support the logistics of this idea, there are some considerable events where not doing what seems right has caused highly negative consequences.…

I learned that the key to choosing quotes from an article is to choose the sentences that put the most emphasis on the argument you are trying to prove to the audience. I also learned that with every quote, the author’s name must be added in parentheses before the period. During this semester, I feel I have accomplished effectively using all three elements: summarizing, paraphrasing, and quotations…
