Cultural identity
Language is an important part of life we use it every day to communicate with each other.
But some people from different countries find it more than a way then just to communicate especially those who immigrate to America and don’t know English yet or are struggling to speak it especially in public. In Richard Rodriguez “aria memoir of a bilingual childhood” Richard struggles to maintain who he is dealing with cultural identity with his Spanish language the only way to communicate with his parents now having to give it up however in Anzadua’s “how to tame a wild tongue” unlike Rodriguez she is pressured to lose her heritage by society but instead makes her stronger with it. In Richards’s article he goes through the trouble of having to speak two different languages from having to speak English outside of his home during that time his home was of a safe zone of sorts being able to be himself and not some different person like he was outside of his home. But after some events that transpired he is faced with the option of having to speak only English both at home and outside also during the time of only trying to speak English he begins to lose touch with his family and is faced with an ultimatum to abandon all ties with his heritage and become a different person to fit into society as a regular English speaking American. Though this is during the time when race Issus’s where still a big problem throughout the country I can’t say I don’t blame him for what he did coming from my point of view when I came to this country I only spoke Spanish and didn’t know a single word in English and when I started to learn English I had an accent to go with it I was terrible at even worse when I had to write in English. The only thing that I think that he could have done differently is to not abandon his heritage if he didn’t he could have still been the person he was during his childhood and not grow up to become a different person. Though he accepted

Both articles reflect how the language an individual speak is linked with their identity. Language is the system of words or signs that people use to express thoughts and feelings to each other. Language has an impulse on a person that allows them to make ties with a certain society, thus giving them a cultural identification. When residents of another country come to America and speak a contrasting language to English, immigrants most likely feel uneasy having to adapt to a completely new culture and learn the English language. During this journey, the individuals’ cultural identities might fade away as well as losing their efficient fluency on their native language. In Amy Tan’s, “Mother Tongue” and Richard Rodriguez “Aria: A Memoir of A Bilingual Childhood”, both authors experience the difficulties of language barrier and adjusting to a different lifestyle in order to develop as an individual in the United States.…

In the essay “How to Tame a Wild Tongue”, by Gloria Anzaldua, the author talks about her childhood in Texas and how she was restrained from speaking Spanish because it wasn’t seen as “American,” instead she was told to speak English. We soon learn that her actual language is Chicano Spanish, which is a cross between Spanish and English and because of it she is looked down upon by both English and Spanish speakers. Throughout the essay she struggles with her own identity as she conforms by speaking a certain language in different situations to fit in but later in her life she takes pride in her culture as she discovers that that is the only way to take pride in herself.…

Gloria Anzaldua in How to Tame a Wild Tongue and Amy Tan in Mother Tongue both share a similar message in their essays, they argue that every single culture faces different language obstacles when learning the english language. Both struggle to develop the correct form of english, the one considered acceptable by society. Both Tan and Anzaldua teach us about their ethnic backgrounds, in an effort to better help us learn of their struggles. Amy Tan, is of asian descent, and tells us how growing up with a mother who spoke “broken english” influenced the person she became and how she approached the world. Gloria Anzaldua, considered herself a Mexican American but mainly Chicana, and she tells us of her struggle to accept her roots and to find a place where she belonged. Ultimately, this also influenced who Anzaldua came to be. The…

“To be kind to all, to like many and love a few, to be needed and wanted by those we love, is certainly the nearest we can come to happiness.” -Mary Stuart. The most important theme that Alice Walker empathizes time and time again in The Color Purple, is having happiness in life. Because in the story Alice Walker has Celie go through many obstacles throughout the whole book. Having her go through a roller coaster of emotions from being sad in the beginning, to all the way to the end of the book where Celie is feeling alive with happiness.…

I am doing this first short paper on language and social identity. “Language is a systematic set of symbols and signs with learned and shared meanings within a culture”. It can be written, spoken, and with gestures or signs. This article is about how language shapes culture in a variety of ways. Language is the key component to a culture, without it there is no culture. Every culture has their own language, each of us might speak differently but doesn’t necessarily mean we think differently. In education, is mainly where we learn the language in whatever culture you’re from. We are taught how to speak since 2 years old and in that that’s how we are identified on what language we use. I as an American we are taught to try to speak more than one language, that’s why there offer course at school to learn to different language like Spanish or French. From experience I believe that learning another language is hard because not only you have to learn the language you have to learn the culture. So I believe it goes hand and hand with each other. You’re identified on how you look and what language you speak. “Culture refers to people’s learned and shared behaviors and beliefs”. So what is a language? A language is learned by a group of certain people and shared by a certain group of people. That is culture. Languages, of course, are human creations, tools we invent and hone to suit our needs. Simply showing that speakers of different languages think differently doesn't tell us whether it's language that shapes thought or the other way around. As we uncover how languages and their speakers differ from one another, we discover that human natures too can differ dramatically, depending on the languages we speak. Language is the single most important thing in a culture and how do we learn it,…

Language and words are part of us human beings. That goes without saying. Because if it won’t be any words people wouldn’t be able to communicate with each other, it wouldn’t be any languages. Nowadays, in such a rushing world everything needs to be done fast. We don’t pay attention to the words we are saying in our daily conversations. We don’t even realize that the origin of the word, its meaning changed over time.…

Language is a crucial unit that constitutes and builds a nation’s culture and so identity, it is not a mere tool that serves to communicate one’s needs in a social order; but rather a complex system of signs that embraces the whole cultural frame of a certain community. Our identities emerge from our cultural transactions and interchanges, and these latter cannot be possible without the mediation of a communicative system i.e. language. Language operates in order to construct meanings and understandings of a particular culture, and thus has a part of responsibility in the creation of cultural identity. It embeds the very customs, ways of life, principles and beliefs of each culture in a distinct connotative setup; that sometimes cannot be relevant or transmitted in another system. It is then a form of resistance through which people must champion their cultural belonging…
