Emergency Period Media
Emergency period media
In June, 1975, Indira Gandhi's government declared a state of emergency and suspended civil liberties. Immediately after this declaration, the government tightened its controls on the Indian mass media, especially o n the newspapers which had reputations of being free and lively. During the Summer of 1975, as Indira Gandhi became increasingly more threatened by the mounting criticisms of her government, she declared a state of emergency. Immediately she took control of the press, prohibiting their reporting of all domestic and international news. The government expelled several foreign correspondents
(mainly American and British) and withdrew accreditation from more than 40 Indian reporters who normally covered the capital. In recent years, this has probably been the most important development in the life of the Indian press. Indira Gandhi's government use the "security of the state" and
"promotion of disaffection" as its defense for imposing strict control on the press. And with the airwaves already under government ownership, Indira G a n d h i successfully controlled the mass communication system in India for over a year and a half.
During censorship, most of the nation's domestic dailies, however, gave u p the battle for press frcedom. Their pages were "filled with fawning accounts of national events, flatteringpictures ofGandhiand her ambitious son, and not coincidentally, lucrative government a d v e r t i ~ i n g . " But two tough, prominent publishers of English-
~
language dailies, The Indian Express a n d The Statesman, fought courageously against Indira Gandhi's opposition of the Indian press.
Despite some bold fights and stubborn stands taken u p by these publishers, its was quite clear that Indirr Gandhi had a s strong a grip on the Indian press as she had on Indian politics, a t least during the government-imposed emergency.
India, a nation which had always cherished democratic principles a n d had admired Mahatma Gandhi's ideals

Secondly, press is the source of presenting one’s self and putting your thoughts in front of public. In Hostage crisis, Secretory Goldschmidt stated “Give our people back and keep you damned oil.” Although oil had nothing to do with the hostage crisis, it remained one of the factor in the press and politician’s mind. In general, the government or any institutions and press are interconnected. Press needs to sell stories for its existence and government has to sell their work and efforts for their survival in public. Therefore it is good to work with media as in mutual…

Politically Indira Gandhi is remembered as one of the greatest politicians by India’s upper class, because they were the only ones that benefited from her regime. She was extraordinarily savvy at manipulating the government in her favor. Originally she was elected into the position of Prime Minister because the “syndicates” and corrupt fat cat politicians thought she would be easy to manipulate and the connection to her father would make her a perfect candidate to get elected by the popular vote. However, they greatly under estimated her knowledge of…

While India has a strong and active civil society, the media is still driven by the educated middle to upper classes. Those who are most vulnerable in society are also the least likely to report on their experiences. Slum dwellers, those from rural communities particularly women and girls, those with disabilities, and those from marginalised castes within Indian society are overlooked as sources, contributors and reporters. There is a perception that the media is not taking up the causes of the underprivileged and oppressed or rural masses and there is hardly any coverage of farmer suicides or of atrocities on Dalits across the length and breadth of the country.…

After the emergency, opposition leaders, hounded and persecuted by Mrs Gandhi during the 21 months it lasted, criticised the Times of India's editorial policy for 'choosing to crawl' even though Mrs Gandhi had merely ordered them to 'bend'.…
