Chapter 1 talks about the industrial revolution and the changes it brought on. It started in Great Britain in the late 1790’s and spread violently across Europe. Countries that were dominated by the agriculture switched to a new industrial society. Many factories across the globe were created and helped modernize many cities. Material goods were produced at an alarming rate and were readily available for the consumer. With the boom of factories in city areas, job opportunities were available thousands of people and even for women. “The working classes constituted almost 80 percent of the population of Europe. New inventions were also being created to aid life for people. With the creation of the engine, new technologies such as the train, cotton gin, and later the automobile revolutionized how people and goods could move across vast areas. “The processing of liquid fuels-petroleum and it’s distilled derivatives-made possible the widespread use of the internal combustion engine as a source of power in transportation. There were also quite a few social changes. The wealth that the new industry brought was shared unequally and made the standard of living for the average person quite bad. The British Industrial Revolution of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries brought about a much needed change in the economic structure of the country. The old fashioned, agricultural based economy that Britain had assumed for centuries had become obsolete, and in the spirit of mercantilism and neighborly competition with the French, the English made the drastic change to a manufacturing based economy (Owen, p. 150). This transformation allowed for the emergence of large, manufacturing based cities, an abundance of English manufactured goods, and made Britain, overall, a very wealthy nation. These byproducts of the Industrial Revolution allowed Britain to make great economic strides, but those that put in the hours at the factories that made such a revolution possible gained almost nothing for their treacherous work. The working class of the Industrial Revolution lived hard, laborious lives. The majority of their time was spent in the factories, which were very often unsanitary, overcrowded, and hazardous, and when they were able to leave the factory and spend time at home, they were met with equally horrid conditions. Although these people and their work were undoubtedly one of the largest factors towards the successfulness of the Industrial Revolution, they themselves suffered greatly, and reaped nearly no benefits for their work. The overall quality of their lives was incredibly poor. Every arena of their lives, from working conditions and home life, to nutrition and cleanliness, was effected by overwhelming poverty. The urban environment that was thought to be a way out of poverty became a mechanism in which poverty was able to flourish.…

There is no question that the Industrial Revolution was an era of technological advancement and social change. It dominated the eighteenth and nineteenth century and spurred change throughout Europe and the United States as people began modernizing and moving to cities, abandoning the traditional agricultural economy (“Industrial”). Enlightenment and Romanticism are both periods of literature that not only are intriquing, but brought forth iconic pieces of work and ideas. I am a huge realist, but I am admittedly more of a Romantcism fan, which rejects reason. Still, I acknowldege the importance of the period and how it has set the foundation of American writing. Before reading work in the Romanticsm movement, I completely dreaded the idea of it. I had a preconcieved notion that it would consist of only love and romance. These children were deprived of their childhood and William Blake the author of “ The Chimney Sweeper” wanted to depict society’s ignorance of child labor and raise awareness towards its injustice.
