Students follow a three year program geared towards entry to IVTB registered vocational centres. At the inception of the program, Catholic education was involved in the preparation of the national curriculum and willingly accepted to operate a prevocational stream in each secondary school. Today, there are 17 catholic colleges which have a prevocational stream.
THE STUDENTS
At national level there are some 4000 students annually which join the prevocational stream. There are some 1200 students in the Catholic sector. Most of the students come from low economic background, broken families and show signs of high level of learning difficulties. Seventeen catholic colleges offer a prevocational stream, out of which 12 colleges are following the Prevokbek curriculum.
In 2003, the Bureau of Catholic Education conducted an Impact Evaluation study of the prevocational programme. The findings gave clear indications that the programme was not achieving literacy and numeracy. It was even irrelevant to some extent. It is within this context that the programme was reviewed and Prevok-Bek was introduced in catholic colleges.

The Prevokbek program has been introduced in 2005. It is a literacy program for the prevocational stream in ten secondary catholic colleges. The program has been designed by the linguist Dev Virahsawmy and a team of teachers. Its main feature is the teaching of Mauritian Creole (Kreol Morisien) to achieve basic literacy and numeracy.
Catholic education has made a breakthrough with the formal use of Mauritian Kreol as both medium and language subject in the Republic of Mauritius. In addition to Mauritian Kreol, English and French languages are taught as Second Languages. Mauritian kreol is used as medium (oral and written) for the teaching of Maths and sciences or vocational subjects.
Prevokbek program ushers the democratisation of education. Prevokbek programme is grounded into several declarations and conventions adopted by UNESCO Member States

Abstract This paper will delve into the process of an already implemented and on-going proposal of teacher development at a private girls’ catholic school in Capital Federal. The introduction will state the nature of the project, the problems dealt with and the objectives, as well as the population involved. The Literature Review will provide the background necessary for its implementation, which includes some bibliographical references that served as backbone to the project. To conclude we will describe the results of the implementation of the proposal , the impact it has had on the subjects involved and its possible future changes, the latter based on a survey attached in the Appendix. Introduction Thirteen years ago I was offered to coordinate the English Department of Primary School at a catholic institution. The population involved in this task were the owners, the authorities of the school, the administrative staff, the teachers, who in the majority had been working at the school for some time, the pupils and, of course, their parents. On first analysing the situation, I set myself two types of objectives: short term objectives and a long term one. The long term objective the authorities commissioned me with, was to improve the level of English of the pupils. This overwhelming task could only be fulfilled if I set myself short term objectives, which would serve as a scaffold to realise such ambitious goal. It entailed thorough work on the teachers’ professional development, as it was my deep belief that the most important asset a school could rely on for its improvement was the teachers. After sitting in during lessons, holding meetings and getting to know the teachers better, I was able to have a clear insight of what the challenges were and, therefore take an appropriate course of action.…

3 This partnership between home and parish is enhanced by the role of the Catholic school in which the educational mission of the Church finds a particular and important expression (Cf General Directory for Catechesis n 259) . This educational mission entails the ongoing development of the entire potential of every person. It seeks to promote the well-being and freedom of every person, made in the image and likeness of God and finding fulfilment in God alone. This is the vision which shapes the daily life of a Catholic school as a community in which faith is expressed and shared through every aspect of its activity. Through the pattern of daily prayer, through the celebration of the sacraments of the Church, through works of charity, through a striving for justice in all it does, a Catholic school seeks to be a catechetical community in which the content and the life of faith is shared (Cf GDC nos 218 & 259). We recognise that in a Catholic…
