Edgar Allan Poe
Edgar Allan Poe was an American author, poet, editor and literary critic, who was considered part of the American Romantic Movement. He was best known for his tales of mystery. He was the first well known American writer to try to earn a living through writing alone, resulting in a financially difficult life and career. When Poe was a very young age his mother died leaving his brother, sister, and himself orphans. He had a very rough life because of the loss of guidance by his parents or foster parents, which caused him to grow up misguided and in debt. He was in debt because of gambling throughout college in order to meet financial needs. Poe never had parents by his side or a hand to grab for help like the majority of the people do. Everyone should be happy for what they have and appreciate every minute of it because there are those who do not even know what happiness is.
With the nature of Edgar Allan Poe’s poems, people have labeled him paranoid, neurotic, oversexed, addicted to various substances, until all the public is left with is an unstable man sitting in a dim room, with a raven over his door, a bottle at his table, a pipe full of opium, scribbling insane verses. In my opinion, Poe was one of the most prolific; touching writers I have come across in my readings. What he wrote stings you into an emotional response, and you can feel his poems, you can be there, in your mind, seeing what he put down on paper. This, in my opinion, is what makes a great writer.
Edgar Allan Poe’s poems interest me the most out of any other poets’ poems. They interest me the most because they are scary and that is what keeps my attention. Poe led a very tragic and sad life; he wrote his poems on his past life. Because of Poe’s past life, he was a sad, miserable man and his poems and stories all had a sad, miserable tone to them.
